Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion 2001

Member Review by VegasOenophile:

Floral nose of ripe fruits with hints of licorice and some smoky, tarry minerality. Rich, coating mouthfeel. Great meaty notes of red berry and a nice savory quality, like the richness of bone marrow. I'd say this wine needs food. - Tasted at Marché Bacchus 8/7/10

La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion is the second wine of Château La Mission Haut-Brion. This name reflects the rich history and tradition of the Château. The Lazarist Fathers, also called the Priests of the Mission, inherited the domain of La Mission and took possession of it in 1664. They built a chapel, consecrated on August 16, 1698 by the dean of the chapter of Saint-André. The priests named the chapel Notre-Dame de Haut-Brion. The exceptional quality of the wine produced by the good friars contributed to the growth of the congregation. The brothers thanked God for His blessings by engraving years of the best vintages on the beams of the chapel. The years 1784, 1811, 1848, 1874, 1899, 1900 appeared on the ceiling of the chapel. Very complex, with blackberries, flowers and minerals. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a fresh, sweet fruit aftertaste. Refined La Mission. Beautiful. Best after 2008. (JS) Wine Spectator. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2001 Mission Haut Brion, La 750ml

...Black cherry, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Dense but juicy and sharply delineated, thanks to its firm spine of acidity. A bit compact today, but finishes with lovely musky sweetness, firm but ripe tannins and superb length. Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2001 Mission Haut Brion, La 750ml
