Chanson Père et Fils Viré-Clessé 2007
With a history dating back to 1750, this fine Domaine was founded during the reign of Louis XV. When the Chanson family took full control in the 1800s, they already had substantial holdings in Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Pernand-Vergelesses, which they added to the business. Ownership of some of the top Premiers and Grands Crus vineyards in Burgundy remains a priority for the house. Their 45 hectare Domaine is managed by Gilles de Courcel and his experienced, dedicated team. Winemaker Jean-Pierre Confuron of the celebrated Vosne-Romanée dynasty continues to improve quality selection of fruit and the refurbished Bastion de l’Oratoire in Beaune is now home to a state of the art fermentation room as well as being the perfect environment for gentle maturation of their crus. Domaine Chanson Viré-Clessé is a truly superb and afforable Chardonnay. It shows pale gold while offering floral fragrances mixed with fresh citrus aromas, enhanced by a beautiful minerality. This Chardonnay gives a crisp attack followed by a tight acidity. It has stunningly pure aromas followed by a refreshing and mineral finish. Overall this is a fine, dry apéritif, great with light seafood and raw vegetable hors d'oeuvres.

The golden cat says 'make money, make money' and thats what the Louis Latour domaine does with its 50 hectares of vineyards and 29 hectares of Burgundy grand cru. But does big grand cru mean big quality? Not quite with this wine tasted blind. A robust yellow bronze colour, first aromas of vanilla and melon, then yellow flowers (daffodlil), creamy and lemon curd, after 10 minutes evolved to a warm peachy nose with suggestions of Mediterranean sunshine and mandarins. On the palate cherry fruit, fresh, chalky texture, prematurely giving. This wine has been made to drink well from the day its bottled. Pleasing now but miles below what could be achieved with a Truffiere. The lieu-dit is up on the hill above Puligny close to Saint-Aubin. Hats off to Ya-hui, Louise and Peter for their tasting notes.
