Chanson is a Burgundy estate whose history dates back to 1750. With extensive holdings in some of the regions most prized vineyards they've produced great reds and white for literally centuries. In 1999 Bollinger Champagne took over what was then a house with its glory starting to fade. Gilles Courcel of Domaine Courcel is now in charge and Jean-Jacques Confuron is the winemaker. The estate has been transformed into what is today one of the top quality producers in Burgundy. So here is a very basic but very finely crafted 2009 Bourgogne red. Grapes are sourced from their own vineyards in the Cote de Nuit and from select growers in the Cote de Beaune. The stellar '09 vintage shines through as the ripe cherry, berry flavors emerge on a framework of racy tannins with spice, wood smoke and forest floor adding to the complexity. A remarkable wine for the price.
Founded in 1750, Chanson is one of the five grand "shippers" of Burgundy's Côte d'Or, an estate steeped in centuries-old tradition and rich in viticultural history. As a négociant (winemaker and merchant) and a domaine (vineyard estate), Chanson has represented the best of Burgundy for more than 250 years, growing its own grapes, partnering with other growers, bottling, selling, and shipping its own wines. Chanson's holdings comprise some of Burgundy's most coveted vineyards (over 90 acres, including 10 Premier Crus, one Grand Cru (Corton), and a rare monopole Premier Cru vineyard. Jean-Pierre Confuron of the Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot is now the winemaker, bringing hands-on, boutique approach to every vat. The grapes for this Nuits St. Georges are sourced from two vineyards right next to the celebrated Premier Cru Vaucrain. It shows ripe berry and forest tones with hints of smoke and truffle. With a history dating back to 1750, this fine Domaine was founded during the reign of Louis XV. When the Chanson family took full control in the 1800s, they already had substantial holdings in Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune and Pernand-Vergelesses, which they added to the business. Ownership of some of the top Premiers and Grands Crus vineyards in Burgundy remains a priority for the house. Their 45 hectare Domaine is managed by Gilles de Courcel and his experienced, dedicated team. Winemaker Jean-Pierre Confuron of the celebrated Vosne-Romanée dynasty continues to improve quality selection of fruit and the refurbished Bastion de l’Oratoire in Beaune is now home to a state of the art fermentation room as well as being the perfect environment for gentle maturation of their crus. Le Bourgogne Pinot Noir shows bright red with dark purple nuances. Intense aromas of red currant and liquorice with a hint of spice delight the senses. This Pinot Noir is concentrated and complex, refreshing and lively with very pure fruit aromas and spicy nuances in the finish. It is the ideal "everyday" Burgundy, ideal with braised and roasted meats, as well as meat-sauced pastas.
