Champagne Montaudon Reserve Premier Mags NV

Winemaker's Notes:

Today Montaudon is one of the rare champagne houses still owned entirely by the founding family. The house of Montaudon is located right at the heart of Reims, a few steps away from the Cathedral. The fermentation room, storerooms and two levels of cellars (where bottles for several year’s supply are stocked) are sited in this well integrated centre. Montaudon owns a vineyard of 45 hectares. The long lasting finish gives further emphasis to its perfect proportions. This Brut wine is an assemblage of the three grape varieties: mainly Pinot Noir, with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. It is fresh lively and elegant, and can be served on all occasions.

When first poured, the wine exhibits a rush of good, small bubbles creating a soft, true champagne-style effervescence. A nice straw-yellow color with an aroma of almonds, filberts and a touch of desiccated, toasted coconut flake. Flavors have good presence if not particularly subtle in tone. A decent, sound champagne.

A meaty champagne with flavors of dried petals and red currants. A tart finish, with more of the meaty, fleshiness. An energetic, powerful house blend.

A racy style, this is very elegant and precise, with green apple, lemon, graphite and honey flavors. Mouthwatering. Leaves a hint of chalk on the finish. Drink now through 2010.

($38) Bright and intense, exhibiting candied berry, preserved citrus and elderflower flavors. It's backed by a firm structure and stays persistent through the lingering aftertaste of ginger and vanilla. Drink now through 2010. 8,000 cases imported. Wine Spectator. A Champagne Blend wine from Champagne in France. N.V. Montaudon Brut Champagne 750ml

Fine texture and delicate yet vibrant acidity are well-meshed with the subtle blend of white peach, candied berry, lemon zest and blanched almond flavors. A hint of fleur de sel shows on the finish. Drink now through 2017.

Smoky aromas of baked bread, nuts, caramel, earth and mushroom. Bit, toasty and full; shows a slight sweet/sour disjointedness but its round, silky texture makes it very easy to drink. Doesn’t have quite the vibrancy or complexity for 90 points, but this rather suave wine boasts very good precision of flavor and a sublet, dry finish.
