Champ de Reves Pinot Noir 2014
Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:
Rather seductively perfumed on the nose with lots of underbrush, root beer candy and coriander accents to the core of deep raspberry coulis fruit all topped with a fresh vegetal note that recalls fennel. Rich and chewy in the mouth and endowed with powerful, dark fruit, though this remains transparent on the palate. there are really beautiful faceted black fruit flavors on the palate cut by decisive mineral notes and all layered over well judged wood. It’s got a super blend of savory and fruity going on right through the long finish which retains enough tannin to make this very food friendly. Muscular yet elegant, this could still improve in the cellar for another 3-5 years. 92pts

A deeply scented, perfumed wine, the 2011 Pinot Noir impresses for its nuanced personality and sheer detail. Dark cherry notes lead to plums, cloves, menthol and crushed rocks. The 2011 is all about delineation, nuance and freshness, all qualities that are very much present in the glass. This is a terrific first effort from Champs de Reves. These vines were only planted in 2006. It will be fascinating to see what develops here in the coming years. Anticipated maturity: 2013–2019.

Bright ruby-red. A smoky, highly perfumed bouquet evokes black raspberry, cherry-cola, dried rose and anise, with a spicy topnote. Weighty dark berry flavors become livelier with air and pick up an element of minerality. Finishes tangy and quite long, with lingering smoke and vanilla flavors and gentle tannins. This 1100-acre property, situated just north of Boonville, was planted in 2006 by Jackson Family Estates and now has 85 bearing acres.

This is the second vintage of the Jackson family’s Anderson Valley pinot noir project, from a high-elevation property that Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke purchased in 1999 and began planting in 2006. The vineyard sits above the town of Booneville at elevations approaching 2,000 feet, benefiting from plenty of sunlight as well as cooling ocean breezes coming over the hills to the west. The vineyard’s sandstone-based soils grew a concentrated, mineral pinot noir in 2011, a wine that feels both ample and focused, glowing with rich dark cherry tones and loaded with earthy scents of cedar bark and forest mushrooms, layered and complex. It’s beautiful now, and its structure has room to grow with time in the cellar.
