Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir Usa California Reds Light Fruity 2001

External Review by Prestige Wine & Spirits:

Given the historic ageability of Chalone's Pinots, you might want to give this five years in the cellar. Right now, it's a bit heavy and soft, although fruity enough, with a great big burst of black raspberry, cherry and vanilla flavor.

Chalone Vineyard is one of the few wineries in the U.S. growing grapes in limestone-based soils, the same as in Burgundy. The spare, well-drained ground, limited rainfall and low crop levels attracted Dick Graff, who wanted to make top-flight Burgundian-styled Chardonnay. Graff made his first vintage under the Chalone Vineyard label in 1966, producing what became a benchmark for California Chardonnay. Read less

Chalone's medium deep ruby-colored 2001 Pinot Noir Estate offers a big, spicy, earthy bouquet of compost, root vegetables, beets, and cherries. The outstanding aromas are followed by mid-eighty point flavors. Medium-bodied, with a short, compact finish, it should be consumed over the next 3-5 years.

Firm, intense and tightly wound, with spicy, earthy wild berry and dried cherry flavors, picking up pleasant earth and mushroom flavors. The tannins hold on. Drink now through 2012.

Opulent currant and black cherry aromas are accented by a light earthiness, like a pine forest after a rain. The same fruit elements harmonize with smoky oak and vanilla notes in the powerful flavors, building to a long, sweet finish.

A graceful, elegant style, with subtle spice, nutmeg and black cherry fruit flavors that is deftly balanced and easy to drink. It finishes with the same degree of delicacy shown up front. Drink now through 2008.

This Pinot is elegant and well-made, with tasty plum, black cherry, dusty berry, a touch of white pepper and subtle earthy mushroom flavor on the finish. Chalone has rebounded nicely from a rough patch in the mid-1990s. Drink now through 2006.
