Chalone Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Monterey County 2013

External Review:

The grapes for Chalone's Monterey County wines come from the southern regions of the 75-mile long Salinas Valley. This bright, jammy Cabernet is both powerful and perfectly approachable. Cassis, dark

Perched in the remote Gavilan Mountain Range, 1,800 feet above California's Salinas Valley, this rugged vineyard sits at the base of an extinct volcano bordering the Pinnacles National Monument. Chalone Vineyard is one of the few wineries in the U.S. growing grapes in limestone-based soils, the same as in Burgundy. The spare, well-drained ground, limited rainfall and low crop levels attracted Dick Graff, who wanted to make top-flight Burgundian-styled Chardonnay. Graff made his first vintage under the Chalone Vineyard label in 1966, producing what became a benchmark for California Chardonnay. Read less

Good Monterey cab. Medium bodied, fairly soft tannins with nice balance, not overly jammy but carries some nice dark red fruit and subtle spiciness. Smoothed out after being open an hour or so. Went well with spicy beef stir fry. very good QPR.

Lackluster Cabernet, with not much of an aroma, and flat on the palette. At $17 I do expect quite a bit more out of the bottle of wine and I'm drinking much better Cabs at $10 - $12.

The grapes for Chalone's Monterey County wines come from the southern regions of the 75-mile long Salinas Valley. This bright, jammy Cabernet is both powerful and perfectly approachable. Cassis, dark chocolate, and blackberry aromas are softened by a hint of vanilla/oak for richness and complexity. In the mouth, flavors of fresh berries, currants, cloves, and a lingering note of cocoa are evident. The wine is full-bodied with nicely balanced tannins and a medium long finish that allows you to keep enjoying this wine long after it has left the glass. Monterey Cabernet Sauvignon matches up well with a wide range of foods from roasted red meats and rich pasta dishes to dark chocolate brownies.
