Chalk Hill Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Its intensely honeyed aromas and flavors are of the divine - ripe pear, apricot and mango, creme caramel, vanilla bean and toasted almond.

Chalk Hill Estate Winery has a very unique terroir and climate, and when Fred Furth, founder of the winery, flew over the land in 1972, he knew that it had the potential to be a top-class vineyard. Chalk Hill Estate Winery is located in the Chalk Hill AVA, part of Sonoma County, and it is the only estate winery located within that AVA. The land itself borders the cooler Russian River Valley and the warmer Alexander Valley, meaning that the 1,400 acre vineyard has a wide range of soil types and a microclimate that is unique to the region. Lisa Bishop Forbes, Chalk Hill’s winemaker, has managed to take the varied grapes that the region produces and turn them into extremely successful wines, especially Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and the winery’s Estate Red. Very pleasant wine, not as good as the 99 I tried in 2002 but still worth drinking

Three Puffs: On the one hand dense, deep and very well-extracted, yet on other both bright and balanced, this generously fruited offering is rife with wonderfully well-fit elements of juicy apples, citrus, sweet toast and cream in its rich aromas and follows with full-scaled flavors of real complexity and depth. A touch viscous but alive and in very fine balance from front to back, it continues to unfold at the finish with long flavors of fruit, minerals, spice and rich oak. There is far more wine here than first meets the nose and palate, and its remarkable impressions of layering tied to its perfectly focused Chardonnay fruit move this exceptional effort convincingly to the head of the class.

Chalk Hill has perfected American Sauvignon Blanc! Toasty oak blends with crisp, plush, ripe pear, apricot, lemon and cream, with a touch of Sauvignon Gris to enhance depth.

Tasting Notes:

Aromas of white flowers, ginger, and white peach preceed a slight flintiness and fresh cream. The palate combines Asian pear, jasmine blossom, and a sur-lie creaminess with and earthy, wet-stone minerality.

Its intensely honeyed aromas and flavors are of the divine - ripe pear, apricot and mango, creme caramel, vanilla bean and toasted almond.

Notes: 43% New French Oak
