Chalk Hill Estate Winery has a very unique terroir and climate, and when Fred Furth, founder of the winery, flew over the land in 1972, he knew that it had the potential to be a top-class vineyard. Chalk Hill Estate Winery is located in the Chalk Hill AVA, part of Sonoma County, and it is the only estate winery located within that AVA. The land itself borders the cooler Russian River Valley and the warmer Alexander Valley, meaning that the 1,400 acre vineyard has a wide range of soil types and a microclimate that is unique to the region. Lisa Bishop Forbes, Chalk Hill’s winemaker, has managed to take the varied grapes that the region produces and turn them into extremely successful wines, especially Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and the winery’s Estate Red. WOW! Big Boy! Deepest ruby I've seen a a long while in the glass. Wonderful nose of berrys. Not as fruit forward as I usually like on the palate....But a very big and opulent wine! If you like your blends BIG then this is righ up your ally. Great body and substance! Cheers!

Blackberry, cocoa and a hint of dusty cedar on the nose. Great rich raspberry fruits in the mouth mingle with plum flavors. Licorice and malt on the finish. A meaty, lengthy, wine

Highly aromatic. Flavors of cocoa, dark fruits (blackberry?), graphite with smooth soft tannins and a very long and delicious finish.

Farbe: Lebhaftes Rubinrot mit violetten Reflexen; Bouquet: Aromen von Johannisbeeren, Pflaumen und Waldbeeren.; Gaumen: Saftig, Kirsch-, Pflaumen- und Holz-Noten. Schönes Gleichgewicht zwischen Frucht und Holz. Mittelgewichtig, leicht zum trinken.

The nose offers peach, mango, Butterscotch Melon and lemon. The flavors add mango, passion fruit, and Musque to the mix. While this Sauvignon Blanc is ripe and powerful, it also possesses the ample structure and acidity to age.

Dark purple. Expansive, oak-spiced dark berry and licorice aromas are complicated by notes of vanilla, smoked meat and fruitcake. Shows a plush, rounded character on entry, then tightens up in the mid-palate and offers smoky blackcurrant and cherry liqueur flavors and hint of mocha. Closes supple and long, with touches of smoke and vanilla and gently gripping tannins. This opulent but energetic wine is surprisingly accessible now, especially after some air time.

The 2010 Proprietary Red Estate (43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 15% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 10% Syrah and 1% Carmenere) is something to be endorsed as the wine world tries to move from a varietal-conscious, mono-cepage philosophy to where the best wines will tend to be blends, even if they are dominated by one grape or another. Chalk Hill’s 2010 Red Estate exhibits an inky/purple color followed by aromas of black olives, cassis and toast. Rich, full-bodied and expressive, it is built for the long haul rather than for current drinkability. A beautiful texture, full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific purity and a long finish suggest it will be significantly more complex and softer in 5–10 years, and last for 20–25+ years.

To call this wine huge is an understatement. Blended from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Carmenère, its most notable feature is tannins. It’s hard, dry and astringent, making it difficult to appreciate now. But there’s a gigantic core of blackberries and black currants. With richness like this, it should age and improve through 2020 at least.

The Estate Red is incredibly rich and luscious. The nose is a melting pot of currant liqueur, blackberries, boysenberry syrup, chocolate, coffee, cinnamon and cardamom. The flavors are equally lush and exotic with additional notes of spicy oak and vanilla. Although the wine shows surprisingly well in its youth, the generous, underlying tannins suggest a long and complex future.

Both firm and supple, with spicy, loamy earth, red currant, red candy and dark berry notes, gaining a nice, minerally edge on the finish. The tannins give the flavors traction. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Carmenère. Best from 2013 through 2023.
