Chalk Hill Estate Red Blend Chalk Hill Ava 2013

External Review by WineExpress.com:

Chalk Hill Estate is a compendium of unique microclimates, exposures and soil types. Nowhere is this ideal situation more evident than in this Estate Red blend. This wine is best blend of the red wines made from the estate. Each variety is perfectly matched to the vineyard site. This wine from the monumental 2013 vintage is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot, 5% Carmenere, 4% Merlot and 4% Syrah. Yields were extremely low, averaging less than 2 tons per acre of very concentrated fruit. After fermentation, the wine was aged in 56% new French oak barrels for 20 months. To preserve its texture and aromatics, the wine was bottled unfiltered. Robert Parker scored this 96 points saying "The 2013 Proprietary Red Estate is a blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot and the rest Carignane, Syrah and Merlot. This is another titanic effort from proprietor Foley. A spectacular dense-purple color and sweet toasty oak intermixed with licorice, blackberry, cassis and graphite are all present in this profound first-growth quality blend that should age effortlessly for 25-30 or more years. This is a stunner and a revelation." Very Limited!

Chalk Hill Estate Winery has a very unique terroir and climate, and when Fred Furth, founder of the winery, flew over the land in 1972, he knew that it had the potential to be a top-class vineyard. Chalk Hill Estate Winery is located in the Chalk Hill AVA, part of Sonoma County, and it is the only estate winery located within that AVA. The land itself borders the cooler Russian River Valley and the warmer Alexander Valley, meaning that the 1,400 acre vineyard has a wide range of soil types and a microclimate that is unique to the region. Lisa Bishop Forbes, Chalk Hill’s winemaker, has managed to take the varied grapes that the region produces and turn them into extremely successful wines, especially Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and the winery’s Estate Red.
