Argentinian telecommunications professional Juan Pelizzatti always had a passion for wine. When the country’s economic crisis hit its peak in 2001, with nothing to lose, he decided to take his family savings and continue the winemaking legacy started with his Italian grandfather. He walked the province of Mendoza in search of suitable land to cultivate, and found 150 ha of it in Agrelo in Lujan de Cuyo. A few old Malbec vines were still alive, and so he sustained these as well as planted new ones, thus founding Chakana. The name means “Southern Cross” and signifies the bridge between Mother Earth and the spiritual world in ancient Incan culture. Vines are planted at a nearly exact 45 degree North-West axis, which not only has spiritual significance in Incan culture, but ensures grapes aren’t hit with direct sun exposure at the hottest part of the day, around 3pm. With careful attention to detail like this, grapes are given the chance to achieve optimal flavor balance and structure. Dry red, white and rosé wines are produced as the Chakana flagship range, reserva and Chakana Estate Selection.

Fresh green apple and lemon balm aromas with a grassy green note and some tart citrus. Cool and juicy on the palate with lemon, soft melon and green apple fruit, some creaminess and a medium texture in the mouth. Turns a bit warmer on the finish, releasing some pleasant peach notes and a bit of oak spice.
"Bright, glittering wine, marrying rich peach and golden-gage fruit with a dab of creamy oak" Oz Clarke
