Chatea St. Jean’s life started in 1920, when it was built as a summer home for Ernest and Maude Goff. It is located in Sugarloaf Ridge in the Sonoma Valley near the legendary Kenwood, California. While the 250 acres of land were originally planted with white grapes, Prohibition encouraged the planting of prunes and walnuts instead. When Chateau St. Jean was founded in 1973, the chateau was restored and opened to the public in honor of the Goff family. As the company says, “only the finest” from their wines, and they delivered on that promise in quick time. In 1999, Chateau St. Jean’s 1996 Cinq Cépages Cabernet Sauvignon won “Wine of the Year,” making the chateau the first Sonoma winery to receive this award. Chateau St. Jean was one of the pioneers in vineyard designation, stressing the importance of a grape’s origin. They didn’t just talk the talk - they took grapes from successful vineyards and made individually labeled Chardonnays, Pinot Noir, and Fumé Blanc. With the hard work and dedication of Margo Van Staaveren, the winemaker for Chateau St. Jean, the winery is able to make high quality wines with a persistent signature flavor profile across different vintages. Since 1994 I have been drinking the Cinq Cepages and found this to be my all time favorite blend. Plenty of body, great nose and extremely tasty. I haven't opened my 07 yet but it's sure to be as good as all of the others.

This fine wine, which is at its best now, offers polished flavors of currants, blackberries and herbs, with smoky nuances from oak. It is smooth and polished in the mouth, with a good balance of acids and tannins. Not an ager, but complex and elegant.

Gorgeous Cabernet, offering a mix of ripe, rich, fleshy currant and blackberry fruit, with hints of herb, olive and sage. Finishes with a firm, structured backbone and ripe tannins giving it depth and richness. Drink now through 2014.

Smooth and harmonious, with ripe, rich, supple plum and blackberry fruit, shaded by cedar, anise, black cherry and spice attributes. Firms up and flexes its tannic strength on the finish. Very well-made. Drink now through 2010.

Bright aromas of blackberry, red currant, cassis and hints of cedar box are inviting on this Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep red ruby. Subdued aromas of currant and dark chocolate. Creamy but juicy flavors of currant, cherry and licorice, with a light herbaceousness; very Cabernet Sauvignon. Bright acidity gives this fairly intense wine a penetrating quality. Finishes firmly tannic, with notes of mocha and oak and good cut.

Rich, ripe and juicy, with excellent black fruits and subtle tobacco and coffee notes. Soft and opulent for easy drinking, yet concentrated and complex without breaking the bank! A consistently great value in California Cabernet.
