Celler de Capçanes Montsant Vall del Calás 2003

Member Review by duncan 906:

I bought two bottles of this wine on the website www.bidforwine.co.uk/auctions/show/103743 for £15.50. Montsant is named after the Montsant mountains in Catalonia north-east Spain where viticulture has been going on since at least the Romans and 12 municipalities got DO status in 2002.It is adjacent to the more prestigious Priorat DO.My bottles come from the Celler de Capcanes co-operative and Vall del Calas is the name of their organic cuvees. My bottles consist of 50% merlot,36% grenache and 15% tempranillo and were aged in oak barrels.I started the first bottle last night with my supper of chicken breast cooked in bacon and I did enjoy it. There is certainly plenty of a blackcurrant, blackberry and redcurrant style fruit there, the tannins are soft, and there is more than a hint of spice about it. I would also say that it is a liitle acidic.I thought this a good quality wine which was a very good compl;iment to the chicken.

Lightly ethanolic nose - this wine reminds me of a mini Barolo. Acorns and leather lead to bitter cherry followed by some sweeter black cherry on the finish.
