Cayuse is a winery located in Walla Walla, Washington. It was founded in the late 1990s by winemaker Christophe Baron, son of Champagne producers for Baron Albert. On a visit to the area in 1996, he stumbled upon an unsullied bit of rocky soil on the Oregon side of the Washington/Oregon border. He suspected this territory had vast similarities in terroir and climate with some of the most prestigious French regions in the Rhone valley and Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Ignoring naysayers, he acted on his intuition and decided to establish vineyards. These types of conditions force vines to dig deep for moisture, resulting in concentrated, structured fruit. He named the wine for the Cayuse, a Native American tribe, themselves named after the French word “cailloux” (“rocks”). The vineyards are mostly planted with Syrah, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Merlot, Mourvedre, Roussane, Tempranillo and Viognier. Shortly after Baron produced his first vintage, he garnered top ratings from the likes of Robert Parker, and Cayuse became a sought after cult wine. The vineyard settlement he founded is now referred to as the “Rocks” area of the Walla Walla valley. Cayuse is also the first winery in the region to practice biodynamic viticultural methods, beginning in 2002.  Read less

This was a wonderfully complex wine, with core of blue and blackberries, good mix of spices, overtones of meatiness, leather adn cigar box. Long, spicy finish and silky tannins. This wine still has several good years left.

COLOR-extremely dark; NOSE-skittles rainbow, massive tropical fruit; TASTE-firm tannins, really nice interesting firm tannins, chocolate \& smokey on the finish, paintballs filled with fruit flavors exploding in your mouth, really nice wine.

The first of the Syrahs is the saturated purple 2006 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard (with 4% Viognier in the blend). It displays a Cote-Rotie-like nose of smoked meat, game, and bacon with a dollop of burnt sugar and blueberry making an appearance. Layered, plush, and super-rich, this full-bodied, pleasure-bent effort has exceptional length. Difficult to resist now, it can be enjoyed over the next 10-12 years.

Syrah is the principal raison d etre at Cayuse Vineyards. In a typical vintage five are produced beginning with the 2004 Syrah Cailloux Vineyard, a cuvee co-fermented with 4% Viognier. It delivers a splendid nose of lavender, leather, meat, and blueberry jam. This is followed by a wine with great flavor already exhibiting complexity. It could use a bit more depth but that is a minor matter. This beauty can be enjoyed through 2025.

Supple open-textured and immensely appealing for the balance of distinctly mineral-accented plum and cherry flavors against subtle touches of coffee wet earth and oak. Drink now through 2014. 536 cases made. HS Wine Spectator.

The red cherry-scented 2001 Syrah Coccinelle Vineyard is medium to full-bodied sweet and packed with cherry flavors. This fruit forward wine also possesses a structured finish. Drink it over the next 5 years Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
