Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

winemaker's notes: Number 39 on the Wine.com 100 of 2007! Aromas of sweet bing cherry and ripe, lush plum. The opulent sweetness of peak-season, fully-ripe fruit brings about abundant yet soft tannins. The core of this wine is a silky and amiably rich, textured base, with a pure Napa Valley Cabernet focus. Over the years we have found that one of the best methods for achieving a friendly character in the bottle is to blend wines possessing different attributes – combining top-quality fruit from several microclimates in our small yet diverse Valley. Using about 25% mountain fruit offers an opaqueness and structure that enriches the sweet fruit of the Valley floor. Such blending is an important part of Caymus Cabernet and its rich yet accessible character. 2005 produced a Cabernet Sauvignon of contemporary potential, saturated with dark color and big, ripe fruit.

Very focused aromatics. Soft and subdued linear movement through the mouth. Well worth a second sip, even a second glass.

A fantastic wine to have in your cellar. This wine has a great nose and wonderful complex taste. I would rather have food with this wine, but can be drank alone.

Deliciously ripe black cherries. Compact elegant dry body with luxurious silky tannins. Some of the best integrated oak I've ever had.

Had this at a work dinner along with a 2005 Far Niente Chardonnay. I actually was blown away by the Far Niente, which left this as my second choice that night. The Caymus is however a great Napa cab sauv. Very nice mix of berries, cassis and a hint of spice. Enjoyable cab, but I have had more impressive ones at a much lower price.

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 92A showy young wine that's smooth, rich and concentrated. Delivers firm, intense yet supple layers of currant, cedar, toasty, cedary oak and tannins that firm up, offering hints of mineral, sage and dusty berry. Best from 2009 through 2013.Wine Tasting NotesAromas of sweet bing cherry and ripe, lush plum. The opulent sweetness of peak-season, fully-ripe fruit brings about abundant yet soft tannins. The core of this wine is a silky and amiably rich, textured base, with a pure Napa Valley cabernet focus. Flavors of cocoa, currant and sweet tobacco. This rich and chalky wine, devoid of assertive astringencies, drinks well now and should endure for a decade or more.

94 Points, Wine Spectator - Firm, intense and well-structured, with a mix of spicy oak, red and black currant, mineral, sage and dusty berry. Turns elegant and refined, yet shows a sturdy backbone on the finish. Best from 2009 through 2014. Dense ruby/purple with low acidity and huge amounts of fruit. This is a seamless, full-bodied Napa Cabernet Sauvignon to drink now and over the next 15+ years.

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 95Firm, intense and well-structured, with a mix of spicy oak, red and black currant, mineral, sage and dusty berry. Turns elegant and refined, yet shows a sturdy backbone on the finish. Best from 2009 through 2014.Wine Advocate ReviewRated 90-92A barrel sample of the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection offers terrific fruit intensity and purity, a more laid-back style, a meaty, chewy texture, and impressive opulence as well as length. It should evolve for 10-15 years.Wine Tasting NotesDark, intense ruby color. Wonderful aromas of ripe berries are followed by the concentrated flavors of black currant, black cherry, hints of mocha and a touch of spice. The deep flavors expand during an extremely long finish, rounded out by a full-bodied mouth feel and velvety tannins.
