Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Special Selection 2001
If generally among the richest Cabernets of the year, Caymus Special Selection bottlings are also among the most outgoing and obvious as well, and this latest very much proves the rule. Immensely oaky, but brought into balance by an equal measure of deep and dramatic fruit, the wine is laced with sweet spice and loamy complexities and is both concentrated and keenly focused from beginning to end. Its fine-grained tannins are so well woven as to be nearly unnoticeable, but they provide just the right spine and insurance for age. Three to five years should make a great thing better, and that many more may show this one at its best.
Always a pleaser for when you do not want to take any chances. May be considered a little too mainstream if you are looking for something different.
Smoothness of tannins was what you would expect from a 10 year old Napa Cab, but the lack of nose was a little disappointing from this Cult producer. Flavors of current and dust ran through.

A lush textured wine that shows gobs of blackberry, cherry, plum, coffee, spice, herb and anise flavors, all framed in firm, ripe tannins. The finish is long, with a spicy edge. Quite intense and full-on.
Like many wines of the vintage, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection has closed down, but it reveals impressive potential. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a veneer of sweet, creamy, toasty oak intermixed with cregrave;me de cassis, earth, and spice box characteristics. The wine is structured, full-bodied, pure, and in need of another 1ndash;3 years of bottle age. It should age well for 10ndash;15 years.
Another amazing Caymus Special Selection. Lots of aromatic complexity, with blackberry, ripe plum, mineral, slate and cedary oak flavors that are rich and concentrated, with ripe, polished tannins and a long, full-bodied finish that echoes mocha and berry flavors. Keeps revealing extra flavor nuances that are vivid and thick. Best from 2005 through 2013.
