What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Winemakers Notes

If generally among the richest Cabernets of the year, Caymus Special Selection bottlings are also among the most outgoing and obvious as well, and this latest very much proves the rule. Immensely oaky, but brought into balance by an equal measure of deep and dramatic fruit, the wine is laced with sweet spice and loamy complexities and is both concentrated and keenly focused from beginning to end. Always a pleaser for when you do not want to take any chances. May be considered a little too mainstream if you are looking for something different.

This bottling marks the 24th vintage that we have designated a Special Selection at Caymus. In all those years, certain vintages stand out in memory because of their near-perfect conditions. I believe that 2001 achieves the stature of the great ones, such as 1978, 1984, 1987, 1990, 1994 and, most recently, 1997. Supersaturated deep ruby color. Aromas of ripe, vanilla-tinged black currants and black cherries, roasted coffee beans and exotic spice. In the mouth, a solid core of sweet, dense liquid cassis flavor flows seamlessly from first taste to a long, expansive finish, underscored but never read more...
