What to Expect

California's Napa Valley has been a source of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon for well over a century. Its warm climate and varied terrain allows for many styles of wine. One thread that runs through almost all the Cabernet based wines from Napa is their lush, ripe full-bodied feel and rich flavors of currant and berry. Wines from the valley floor, particularly around Rutherford, are famed for a dusty quality and those coming from the hillsides surrounding the valley, Mt. Veeder, Diamond Mountain and Howell Mountain for example, tend to be a little leaner with more obvious structural elements.

Winemakers Notes

Harvested from vines planted in the mid-1960s, Caymus Vineyards' Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon originates form the same 14-acre Rutherford-appellation vineyard every year. Growing on low-yielding, gravely loam soil, the vines themselves produce fewer clusters than the average vine, producing berries more intensely flavored. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Special Selection has become known for its consistency and distinct "Caymus" characteristics.

Chuck Wagner, winemaker/grower at Caymus Vineyards, practices winemaking techniques that read more...are unique to the California wine industry as a whole. Having developed his own definitive style over the past decade, Wagner attributes most of the Special Selection's success to two elements: first, the small vineyard from which the fruit is harvested and second, the vinification techniques used in making the wine.

The 1994 vintage was long and consistent, the wine dark and intense. At 25 months' aging in French barrels, this wine emerged with the ripeness and structure the vineyard is known for. The Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is adventurous and clean in its raspberry, blackberry and cherry characteristics and is lusciously balanced with an elegant spiciness.

While drinking well it its youth this wine will reveal increasing layers of complexity over time. Chuck Wagner feels this wine will be best enjoyed between five and seven years from the vintage date.    (hide)
