The flavors in this wine are genuinely good, but the textural elements are its most exceptional feature. The entry wanders, deliberating, then evolves and expands to cocoa- like fine tannins in harmony with oak, fruit and acidity. A balanced and harmonious wine with a long evolution.
Charlie Wagner founded Caymus Vineyards in 1972 and has made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon every year since its founding. Caymus focuses entirely on this variety and the winery's 60-plus acres of estate Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa Valley's Rutherford District forms the foundation of Caymus' Cabernet every vintage. And every vintage Caymus Cabernet is snapped up by Cab lovers and collectors while it's lauded by critics. The 2009 scored 91 points by the Wine Spectator who said "Supple and creamy-textured, with mocha, ripe plum and cherry flavors that show touches of tobacco, espresso and underbrush. Full-bodied, gaining tannic traction on the finish, elegant and readily approachable. Drink now through 2018."
A rain soaked winter brought about a spectacular spring, with vine growth showing the first glimpse of fruit in April. The 2010 growing season continued with unusually cool periods which ultimately resulted in low productions. There is an old rule in the making of fine wine "poor yields produce the richest wines." I feel that our 2010 Caymus "Napa Valley" Cabernet is a product of low yield producing a fine wine that defines the Caymus style. The nose of this wine is especially interesting to me. There's the presence of a well-cared for, clean farmstead. Possibly the aroma of a freshly opened bale of hay or the combine dust during the summer harvest at my cousins wheat farm in St. John, Washington. This is layered with the fruit components─ ripe cherries crushed in a snifter, a subtle smell of ripeness. And a bit of grape pumice at fermentation, rustic. Other nuances come to mind─ smoke in a forest cabin, earth, spice and cola. The flavors in this wine are genuinely good, but...
