Mineral and petrol aromas are followed by muted apple and grapefruit in this juicy, dry Riesling. Elegant and firm, with a crisp finish. Think shellfish and sautéed sole. Drink now through 2009.
Just over the border there is a little town called Jordan, Ontario. In this town you will find a world class winery named Cave Spring. Their 2008 Estate Riesling comes from the VQA (Vintners Quality Alliance) Beamsville Bench, splashing distance form Lake Ontario. The mouth puckering flavors of peaches and kiwis are balanced by a bracing acidity and finishes dry and clean. An amazing wine that can give some Alsace properties a run for their money.
Cave Spring selectively hand-harvests at the ideal moment of ripeness so their wines embody richness, depth and sophistication. This Riesling exudes mandarin orange and sweet lime aromas with subtle mineral notes. The mouthwatering acidity is beautifully balanced with bright fruit flavors and enhanced minerality. The wine evolves with each sip and leaves you wanting more. Serve with pan-seared scallops with ginger-orange spinach.
Pale straw-green. Austere minerally nose hints at yellow apple, sweet spices and chamomile. Picks up a licorice note to go along with the apple and spice flavors on the palate. Seems a bit sweeter than the CSV bottlings, but has plenty of acidity to carry the flavors. Finishes bright and long. In my experience, the licorice-anise note in this wine becomes more pronounced with age.
Canada has made a name for itself with ice wines, but its dry wines are just as delicious. This reserve Riesling has layers of melon and minerality that make it hearty enough to pair with wintery dishes.
Appealing aromas of pine forest, peach and mineral signal this off-dry style. It's medium-bodied, with a lovely structure and a long, lime- and mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2012.
