Cave de Tain l'Hermitage Crozes-Hermitage les Hauts du Fief 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

WINE: Deep and dark colour. The nose is complex and remarkably intense with blackberry fruits, cherries and moka. Generous mouthfeel with similar notes, well-structured but balanced. Fine grained, velvety tannins. Long and persistent finish on cherries, liquorice, moka. VITICULTURE & VINIFICATION: Pebbles made of fluvio-glacial alluvium - stony, warm and filtering. Extremely dry in the summer favouring healthy and early maturing of grapes. Long maceration and running off warm into French oak barrels for 12 months. DOMAINE: The Cave de Tain has revived an original Syrah vineyard in Crozes Hermitage, in association with 7 other growers. Located in the heart of the appellation, in Gervans, this vineyard enjoys an exceptionally good site and faces the Rhône : it is planted on slopes made up of granite sand with ideal exposure to sunlight. It is a showcase for the growers’ historic savoir-faire, with traditional trellising (échalas) and terraces supported by dry stone walls. This plot has been completely replanted with SYRAH vines and is vinified separately to compose one facet of our Crozes Hermitage plot selection : Les Hauts du Fief. This wine was also scored 87-88 points by Robert Parker and 88 points by the International Wine Cellar..

When you think Cave de Tain, your mind should instantly jump to Syrah. Syrah is the only red varietal that Cave de Tain makes into wine, making it a specialist in its production. Not only that, but it is also the leading producer of “cru” wines in the Northern Rhone Valley, with about 2,500 acres of grapes planted. Cave de Tain is a collective of about 330 growers located in Rhone Valley, France. Louis Gambert de Loche founded Cave de Tain in 1933 and became its first president. The wines produced as a part of the Cave de Tain l’Hermitage are sourced across many terroirs and domaines, including Crozes Hermitage, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint Peray, Saint Joseph, and Vin de Pays. Not only does it encompass wine produced across these regions, but it produces almost half of the wine grown in the Crozes Hermitage. Read less

Tar, incense, pepper with black and purple fruit on the nose. Hints of blueberry. Some herbs and smoke. Herbal notes on the palate with black and purple fruits accented by blue fruits. Sage. Light pepper. Meaty and has a savory finish. Lots of roasty, smoky tones. 90 pts. 3/9/13

Very appealing smoke and bacon nose follows through on palate. Really smooth mouthfeel.

Hermitage's little, less prestigious sibling. Not a bad value-oriented taste of the Northern Rhone.

Tasting Notes:

Deep dense garnet color with purple tints. Harmonious and intense nose of candied fruits and toasty overtones, cocoa beans, liquorice and spicy aromas. The palate is powerful, smooth and elegant. Full-bodied wine with silky tannins and ripe fruit. Well-balanced and exceptional concentration due to good climatic conditions. The peppery finish is long and persistent. A racy wine with over 8 years ageing capacity.
