Coming from a large cooperative in the Languedoc-Roussillon corridor, Cave de Pomerols is an annual winner in the values sweepstakes. The 2012 Picpoul de Pinet, often known as the Muscadet of southern France, is a naked, 100% Picpoul (which is also known as Folle Blanche) offering plenty of grapefruit, citrus and wet rock-like characteristics in a light-bodied, crisp, elegant, dry, well-made style. It is not meant to age, so enjoy it over the next 6–12 months with shellfish and seafood.
The Picpoul grape is one of the oldest varieties that grows in the Languedoc region of France. Lovely floral aromas are complemented by delicate fruit flavors in this delicious white wine. You can pick up nuances of honeydew melon, pear, white peach and a hint of lime zest on the palate. I love to sip this wine on its own, nicely chilled, on a hot summer day. Pair this with pan-seared flounder and sautéed spinach.
