Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit of rose over strawberry confiture greets the nose followed by  a little meaty braised veal sweetness along with limestone, quinine and mint accents.  Soft and open on entry with juicy acidity highlighting the  small cherry fruit. This is a bit simple but shows a nice blend of richness and freshness, with good power and follow through on the long, limestone edged, small cherry fruits and gently herbal finish. 91pts

HISTORY On the periphery of the Castiglione Falletto township, centre of the Barolo area, crowning the Bricco Boschis hill, one comes upon the Tenuta Vitivinicola Cavallotto (the Cavallotto Vineyards) of 25 hectares of which 23 spread of vineyards. Cavallotto Estate has been in the family for five generations and in 1948, the brothers Olivio and Gildo, who were continuing the work of their grandfather Giacomo, their father Giuseppe and their uncle Marcello, became the first people of the area to dedicate themselves to the production and trading of wines. These wines were obtained solely from the grapes of their own vineyards. Olivio's offspring, Laura, Giuseppe, and Alfio continue to produce wine which is made exclusively from the estate's grapes and from the transformation of these they obtain DOC and DOCG: Barolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo Langhe, Freisa Langhe, Grignolino Piedmonte, Pinot Langhe, Chardonnay Langhe. VINEYARDS The vineyards of the Bricco Boschis estate extend over 23 hectares of which about half is given over to Nebbiolo vines for Barolo wine. The remaining part is sub-divided into Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa, Grignolino and since 1989 Chardonnay and Pinot Nero vines. The Nebbiolo vines for Barolo wine can be found in two historical zones of the Castiglione Falletto commune: Bricco Boschis which is the seat of the wine cellar and the Vignolo zone. Bricco Boschis was sub-divided by the family in 1961 into three vineyards: San Giuseppe, Colle Sudovest, Punta Marcello. ESTATE The Cavallotto Estate extends to the east over the Bricco Boschis vineyards which are right behind the 1800 farmhouse. In the central body of the building, which is not underground, you can see the space assigned to the fermentation. The freshly harvested grapes are separated from their stalks and are steeped and fermented in stainless steel wine vats which contain hl 100 at a controlled temperature. The maturing of Barolo, Barbera and a part of the Dolcetto takes place in Slavonic oak barrels of 10, 30, 50, 80, 100 hl. Read less

Limestone on the nose is followed by notes of cut grass, sweet mint, a little root veg , and a hint of toasty coffee. There is  lovely balance and elegance in the mouth with its black cherry core framed by gentle notes of  peach and limestone. There’s a great aromatic lift to the  lovely finish, which shows great tannins in a  cool and compact style that is full of fresh fruit accented with a tarry note and lent real drive by the juicy acidity. 92pts

Very savory and slightly smoky with more of a red fruit character than the San Giuseppe but also darkly scented with a bit of rubber on the edges and emerging notes of macerating flowers and gentle notes of middle eastern spices (cardamom/coriander) 3 Very elegant in the mouth with very fine, polished tannins and solid vibrant acidity, mouth filling without weight 3 Rich red plumy/wild strawberry fruit with notes of maduro tobacco, green anise seeds and hints of dried fruits in the mouth 2+ Tannins clamp down on the finish turning a bit drying yet the dried strawberry fruit of the finish lingers 2+ 92pts

A little steeped herbal, marmite nose, with a touch of caramel and root vegetables  filling in under the core of small, slightly stewy red berry fruit topped with a touch of espresso foam. This shows some  big fruit on any, that leads to a nice core of tarry dark fruit and tobacco, all nicely cut with soft tannins.  Like the nose this is very savory, and not terribly fruity, but intense and fresh with a big tannic finish that does soften nicely with air. The finish is a little medicinal with a cherry cough syrup aspect and a hint of pomegranate fruit.  This really does soften quickly with air, don’t hang on to these. 89pts

A rich, dense version, with power and beefy tannins supporting the cherry, wild herb, eucalyptus and tea notes. This is tight and bursting with latent energy, so give it more time. Shows excellent length and resonance on the finish, which hints at the ultimate potential here. Best from 2018 through 2036. 692 cases made.

Layered fragrances recall rose, violet, perfumed berry, leather, tilled earth and baking spices. The delineated palate delivers juicy Morello cherry, white and black pepper, cinnamon and herb alongside firm but velvety tannins and vibrant acidity. Give it time to develop complexity. Drink 2018–2038.

Sweet, silky and exceptionally well-balanced, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is all about texture and harmony. Floral notes meld into dark red stone fruits, plums, cinnamon, tobacco and orange peel. Today the aromas are quite closed, the result of the recent bottling, but all the elements are in place for the 2008 to develop into a gorgeous Barolo. Here, it is the wine’s purity above all else that is striking. With time in the glass, the aromas start to gradually open up, releasing an incredibly expressive array of floral and savory overtones. There is so much to look forward to.
