Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lots of leather and camphor on the nose along with jammy dark fruit, this is a bit hot and a bit indistinct on the nose. Smells like essence of spicy leather and pollen. Light on entry, this turns a bit jammy and almost soft, though there are good supporting acids. The tannins are a touch rough here adding a rugged feel to the palate, which is powerful with late arriving cherry fruit followed by a short, tannic finish that shows licorice and earth inflected cherry in alcohol fruit with a touch of meatiness. This is packed with tannin.90pts

HISTORY On the periphery of the Castiglione Falletto township, centre of the Barolo area, crowning the Bricco Boschis hill, one comes upon the Tenuta Vitivinicola Cavallotto (the Cavallotto Vineyards) of 25 hectares of which 23 spread of vineyards. Cavallotto Estate has been in the family for five generations and in 1948, the brothers Olivio and Gildo, who were continuing the work of their grandfather Giacomo, their father Giuseppe and their uncle Marcello, became the first people of the area to dedicate themselves to the production and trading of wines. These wines were obtained solely from the grapes of their own vineyards. Olivio's offspring, Laura, Giuseppe, and Alfio continue to produce wine which is made exclusively from the estate's grapes and from the transformation of these they obtain DOC and DOCG: Barolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo Langhe, Freisa Langhe, Grignolino Piedmonte, Pinot Langhe, Chardonnay Langhe. VINEYARDS The vineyards of the Bricco Boschis estate extend over 23 hectares of which about half is given over to Nebbiolo vines for Barolo wine. The remaining part is sub-divided into Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa, Grignolino and since 1989 Chardonnay and Pinot Nero vines. The Nebbiolo vines for Barolo wine can be found in two historical zones of the Castiglione Falletto commune: Bricco Boschis which is the seat of the wine cellar and the Vignolo zone. Bricco Boschis was sub-divided by the family in 1961 into three vineyards: San Giuseppe, Colle Sudovest, Punta Marcello. ESTATE The Cavallotto Estate extends to the east over the Bricco Boschis vineyards which are right behind the 1800 farmhouse. In the central body of the building, which is not underground, you can see the space assigned to the fermentation. The freshly harvested grapes are separated from their stalks and are steeped and fermented in stainless steel wine vats which contain hl 100 at a controlled temperature. The maturing of Barolo, Barbera and a part of the Dolcetto takes place in Slavonic oak barrels of 10, 30, 50, 80, 100 hl. Read less

A bit stinky on the nose and not particularly clean. This offers up unusual aromas of grass, toast, and some beefy aromas along with a very earthy licorice root note.  Soft in the mouth with decent acids and a cooked fruit profile of plum and dark cherry with a strong medicinal overlay  that has an earthy sweetness to it.  This is quite tannic and dry, the tannins seem a bit woody  and seem out of proportion with the wine here. Not a good showing for this wine. 80pts

Big red fruit, floral, and leather aromas dominate the nose over a  minty base note with hints of tar creeping in along with a lightly spicy note. This is elegant and finely balanced, very broad on the palate but this lacks a touch of height at the moment. The tannins here are quite refined, allowing the lovely bright juicy fruit with layers of mint and tar to flow across the palate and through the fine long finish. Showing nice tension in the mouth, this just needs a bit of time to fill out a bit but it doesn’t strike me as a wine for long ageing. 91pts

Average age of the vines 45-50 years 30 day maceration Deep high toned nose with tobacco, wet cigar, cigar ash, laurel to menthol top note, closes up in glass 2+ Dense and layered in the mouth with bright juicy acids and very fine tannins with just the slightest drying edge 2+ Dark and earthy at first but the superb core of fruit manages to break through for moments of brilliance with excellent complexity slightly on the medicinal end of the spectrum, menthol, licorice, angelica root and quinine all frame to dark fruit, still very reticent 3 Tough on the finish and drying a bit this is built for the long haul and the imposing structure is really architecturally beautiful and supports a savory finish of imposing length 3+ 2016-2036 92pts

The reticent nose reveals some deep, dark notes of earth, dried flowers and fruit with an almost tropical top note of pomegranate. Very focused in the mouth with a cylindrical feel to the meaty, ripe fruit. Very precise with excellent cut and balance and a powerful, if closed feel. Will definitely improve and have a very long life 92pts

What a nose on this. Layered with dried floral tones, orange rind, minerals, black spices, a touch of tar and nuanced green anise seed and herb round out a remarkably still open nose. Powerful int he mouth with a luxurious richness. Perfectly balanced plush fruit draped over ripe tannins with perfectly integrated mouth watering acidity. This tightens up considerably on the backend but is poised for greatness. 94pts

From magnum. Wow this explodes from the glass with tons of fruit, a compte of pear, strawberry and cherry greatly enhanced with notes of nettle, smoke, and limestone rich earth. Big and rich entry with a touch of pruniness up front that leads to a round, ripe midpalate full of dark plum tinged fruit. Remains rich and layered with spice and smoke notes lifted apon bright acidity and ripe tannins. The finish shows that the wine could use some time to smooth out some of the roughness as the plush and chewy midpalate does turn a touch drying and lean on the finish. Pretty classicly styled and due to improve. Drink 2012-2025

The nose showed deep, rich red fruits, poppy and menthol with a zesty, almost tropical note of tangerine. On the palate, it was velvety and rich with sweet, spiced red fruits. The finish was intense, structured and long. This wine is just starting to drink well but could use a few more years. A must have!

Dark and intriguing in the glass, not showing much change in tonality at the edge of the glass, the wine looks fantastic and young. On the nose the wine has a far more generous expression than expected with a great spicy, smokey quality as well as a dried fruit mix, some plummy action, crushed cherries there too. The wine was a brute force on the palate, a real knock out expression but wonderfully structured and complex, the tannins were very soft and the aftertaste long and supple. This wine is a charming mix of flavours, power and subtlety that evolves intriguingly with every hour. An absolute pleasure and a wine to be contemplated.

Blackberry and flower aromas. Deep flavors of black fruit, mellow tannins, leather and earth. There's a bit of an edge to it that I love. This is an amazing wine.

The 2006 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is a cool inward wine. It boasts striking power and masses of fruit in an implosive style that will require many years to show at its best. The 2006 is all about sheer energy power and muscle. Layers of fruit begin to flesh out on the muscular finish but the 2006 San Giuseppe remains in an embryonic stage of its development. Readers will need to be patient. This is another totally impeccable wine from the Cavallotto brothers. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036. -Antonio Galloni Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
