Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

96+ points Monica Larner (Wine Advocate): Cavallotto is on a roll with some very impressive new releases. The 2013 Barolo Bricco Boschis is a tremendous effort that has an edge on the excellent 2010 vintage in my view. The wine shows a beautifully exuberant but elegant bouquet with the ethereal and undertone fruit and spice aromas you get with Nebbiolo. Although the wine is never overdone, it does show silky persistence and a long finish that comes from the noble nature of the tannins and the wine's textural finesse. Yet, it is playfully deceiving in a way because behind that polished grace, it delivers impressive depth and power. Drink: 2019-2040. (Jun 2017)

HISTORY On the periphery of the Castiglione Falletto township, centre of the Barolo area, crowning the Bricco Boschis hill, one comes upon the Tenuta Vitivinicola Cavallotto (the Cavallotto Vineyards) of 25 hectares of which 23 spread of vineyards. Cavallotto Estate has been in the family for five generations and in 1948, the brothers Olivio and Gildo, who were continuing the work of their grandfather Giacomo, their father Giuseppe and their uncle Marcello, became the first people of the area to dedicate themselves to the production and trading of wines. These wines were obtained solely from the grapes of their own vineyards. Olivio's offspring, Laura, Giuseppe, and Alfio continue to produce wine which is made exclusively from the estate's grapes and from the transformation of these they obtain DOC and DOCG: Barolo, Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo Langhe, Freisa Langhe, Grignolino Piedmonte, Pinot Langhe, Chardonnay Langhe. VINEYARDS The vineyards of the Bricco Boschis estate extend over 23 hectares of which about half is given over to Nebbiolo vines for Barolo wine. The remaining part is sub-divided into Dolcetto, Barbera, Freisa, Grignolino and since 1989 Chardonnay and Pinot Nero vines. The Nebbiolo vines for Barolo wine can be found in two historical zones of the Castiglione Falletto commune: Bricco Boschis which is the seat of the wine cellar and the Vignolo zone. Bricco Boschis was sub-divided by the family in 1961 into three vineyards: San Giuseppe, Colle Sudovest, Punta Marcello. ESTATE The Cavallotto Estate extends to the east over the Bricco Boschis vineyards which are right behind the 1800 farmhouse. In the central body of the building, which is not underground, you can see the space assigned to the fermentation. The freshly harvested grapes are separated from their stalks and are steeped and fermented in stainless steel wine vats which contain hl 100 at a controlled temperature. The maturing of Barolo, Barbera and a part of the Dolcetto takes place in Slavonic oak barrels of 10, 30, 50, 80, 100 hl. Read less

This is pretty complex on the nose starting out in an earthy vein with  a sweet carob note that's almost fudgy, then deep herbal notes with hints of quinine and mint that are almost peppery followed by cherry pit fruit with a hint of dried meats. Nice tannins are supple if abundant on entry with lively acidity supporting a nice core of cherry fruit that shows a hint of tobacco and some roasted fruit edges. The finish is a touch short with dry tannins shutting things down fairly quickly. 89pts

More directly quinine and herb scented on the nose with ripe dark fruits, a bit of plum and dark berry. Smooth and finely balanced on entry with soft tannins and integrated acids underpinning nice wild cherry/ touch of black raspberry fruit with nice dried herb hints. This is very elegant, with lovely darkly ripe fruit that remains fresh, with good focus and excellent flavor definition in the mouth. The small but classic tannins add a nice dry edge to the finish, which turns  a bit chunky and inelegant, and almost sweet with fruit. This just needs some time to fully integrate. 91pts

A bit cooked, jammy, spicy, rich and masculine, musky floral tones, nice ripe green herbal tones are subtle but offer some contrast, soft in the mouth, a bit extracted, sticky almost, muddy on the palate, tannins are a bit soft, nice dark yet indistinct fruit, finish is short and much of the same,

AWE blind tasting - savory, wild raspberry liquor, clay, brushfire, deep for the vintage, slight herbal notes some spicy strawberry seeds, touch of bitter almond, a bit chewy, nice fruit tones, a bit black raspberry, nice mineral note, fresh, wild cherry on the mp, subtle but with nice complicating notes of sandalwood, a hint of caraway, dark spice tones, fairly complete if a touch chunky, nice finish, lots of fruit tannin, a bit spicy, more bitter almond on the finish, should improve, 89-90

Very sweet on the nose with subtle cherry fruit and notes of peach, dried citrus peel, candied fruit and candied licorice. On the palate you can feel the fruit tannins that give this a big, rich and slightly chewy texture. The fruit is red and yet a bit roasted giving it a strawberry jam tone that offers up soft accents of licorice with a bit of clay earthy adding firmness on the finish. This comes off fairly soft and gentle but well-balanced. 88pts.

This was released in the same lot as the 79. Also very fresh but showing significantly more aromatic evolution than the 79 with a fine balanced blend of evolved tones of camphor and gunpowder adding contrast to the dark red fruits.in the mouth this offered great depth yet showed more youthfully than the nose implied with a powerfully, chewy texture and chunky tannins that could use some time to resolve. Again this late in the evening I am not perfectly equiped to delve into the detail of the wine but I am confident this is worthy of at least

A fairly evolved nose yet one with plenty of complexity as the layers of dried vegetal tones, middle eastern spices, gunpowder and leather open in the glass. This is still a slightly tannic wine and is quite fruity with a nice prosciutto edge and a distinct umami note on the finish that serves as a counter point to the rich red cherry fruit tones. 91pts

5 out of 5 - first time ive given that this year i think. An incredible wine, and certainly the only Italian wine ive ever given top marks to. This is a Barolo, for sure, but it tones down a lot of the jarring secondary aromas many Barolos have (tar, truffles, barnyeard, violets), and while they are still there, its much more in balance, with notes to mint on the nose, and then fennel, cherry and leather on the mid palate. Beautiful!

This Nebbiolo comes from each Nebbiolo, generally younger. Great property with typical aromas of the Barolo Bricco Boschis mainly fruity floral with hints of spices then, open and intense. Great attitude to aging. - Winery

Cavallotto's 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo is endowed with serious depth and richness, all backed up by the formidable structure of the vintage. Racy and vibrant, the 2010 bursts from the glass with sweet red berries, cinnamon and freshly cut flowers. This is a gorgeous wine that over-delivers for the money. If given some air, the 2010 can be enjoyed today, but it definitely needs food. I very much like the intensity here. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

The 2009 Langhe Nebbiolo is a big, powerful wine endowed with considerable textural richness. Sweet red cherries, tar, mint, flowers and licorice are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. This is one of the bigger vintages of this wine I can remember tasting. There is plenty of underlying structure to support the fruit. I would not be surprised to see this give many a Barolo or Barbaresco a run for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. ** SOLD OUT **

Here is textbook Barolo with long, fine tannins and elegant aromas of small berry fruit, mesquite wood, tar and black licorice. The wine also offers warm earthy notes and a fresh menthol-like touch on the close. Pair it with grilled lamb and chopped ... Wine Enthusiast.
