Blending different varietals, different lots and even different vintages is an art as old as winemaking itself. Blending different varietals, different lots and even different vintages is an art as old as winemaking itself. In Bordeaux, the blending of the famous five - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec - is a centuries old art. Each component is thought to add a level of complexity to the wine. Over the past 20 years, Nicolás and Laura Catena and their vineyard management team have worked tirelessly in the discovery, identification and development of key microclimates in the high altitude wine country of Mendoza, Argentina. Nicolás Catena has planted an almost countless number of varietals and clones throughout his mountain vineyard sites. This quest for quality lead Nicolás and Laura Catena to a crucial discovery regarding the influence of altitude on grape cultivation in Mendoza. Observing the important differences in soil types, average temperatures and thermal amplitudes that exist at varying altitudes, he found that vineyard sites which are just a few kilometers apart can have vast differences in altitude and possess remarkably different microclimates. A jammy red that balances ripe plum, cassis, baking spice, mocha and medium tannins with juicy acidity. Rich, but finishes a touch on the coarse side. Drink now.

Highly recommended in pretty much every vintage for its depth, complexity and incredible richness. Heavily weighted with cassis, black currant and plum fruit, and layers of smoke, anise, pepper, tobacco leaf and cedar notes.

The 2010 Catena Cabernet Sauvignon undergoes a five-day cold maceration and is raised for 12 to 14 months in barrel: first, second and third fill. It is a blend of four vineyards and is blended with 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It has a Bordeaux-like bouquet of blackberry, bilberry, graphite and dry tobacco that is well-defined and classic in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There is a palpable sense of tension to this Cabernet, which exhibits great precision on the spicy, edgy finish. Full of personality, this comes highly recommended. Drink nowandndash;2017.

Good dark red. Pure aromas and flavors of currant, cherry, licorice, mocha and spices are lifted by a floral perfume. A nicely focused midweight, with bright acidity leavening the wine’s sweetness and giving it a distinctly juicy character. Very harmonious cabernet with well-judged oak (the percentage of new oak is going down every year, notes winemaker Alejandro Vigil).
