Castillo de Monseran Old Vines Garnacha 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

This 100% Garnacha from 30- to 50-year-old vines comes from a co-op in the Cariñena DO of Aragón region with 40 different growers. An incredible bargain, it has no barrel influence, and is very fresh and fruity on the nose with cherry pie like fruit and fresh rose floral notes. Smooth and velvety on the tongue with a nice freshness. Simple with pretty floral notes. 86 points Jay Miller (Wine Advocate): The 2010 Garnacha spent 3-6 months in American oak. Aromas of rose petals and black cherries inform the nose of a grapy, ripe, easy-going red to pair with pizzas and burgers over the next 3 years. (Jun 2011)

Castillo de Monseran:
Castillo de Monseran is a value-driven wine brand out of Cariñena, Spain. The label depicts a Medieval castle, which is not an uncommon site in this historic region. Low key on the nose, but with a very attractive array of strawberry/rhubarb, ginseng, juniper and floral tones, with a hint of dried bitter orange zest. A bit thick up front and low in acid, but rather mouth-filling. This delivers plenty of lightly dried strawberry fruit with hints of spice and earth in a nice, medium-bodied style that doesn’t feel forced. I would like to see better acids here but this is nicely perfumed in the mouth with a nice, fresh finish that offers a lovely flush of gentle tannins. 87pts

This wine has 14.5% alcohol by volume and the bottle is sealed with a natural cork. The wine is a deep ruby red color. The appealing nose has cherries, white pepper, vanilla, wild flowers, baking spices and a touch of dark chocolate. This has medium body with moderate tannins and good acidity. Spicy cherries and white pepper pop out first on the palate with a floral note coming out on the backend. The finish has decent length with a touch of earthiness adding some depth. Not bad but not really showing anything special at this time, I'm sure this will be better down the road. (89 pts)

The nose was ripe, yet characterful, showing dark fruit, ripe strawberry, mint, and a hint of oak. On the palate, it was rich and deeply rooted in brambly, earthy fruit with blackberry, currant, hints of stem and minerals. The texture was full yet grainy with tannin that tugged at your already black-fruit saturated palate. A solid vein of acidity kept it fresh enough for the dinner table, yet fun enough for the back porch. The finish was tart, with a slightly syrupy, lip-smacking quality--yet fresh. An excellent bottle of wine and a great value. (90 points)

I tried the 2010 - lots of mild berry flavor and spice
