What to Expect

The great sweet wines of Bordeaux, Sauternes, are among the most decadent, complex and simply enjoyable wines. Based on a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has been infected with the "noble rot", Botrytis Cinerea, Sauternes are rich, honied wines bursting with notes of vanilla, coconut, dried apricots and subtle spice tones. They are usually very sweet and rich with a soft quality to them that makes them appealing in their youth yet they can age and improve for decades. The neighboring village of Barsac frequently makes wines comparable to those of Sauternes.

At the price, you can't find a better dessert wine.Castelnau is a blend of 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon. This is fermented in new oak barrels and then aged for 24 months in second year barrels. The wine shows a beautiful golden colour, sign of great concentration. The powerful nose exhibits notes of crystallized fruits, spices and toasted aromas, adding freshness in the aftertaste. After a powerful attack, the wine is very generous in the mouth, again with aromas of crystallized. Lush sweetness that is honey on the palate with spicy flavors and a beautiful freshness. The wine is nectar quality, both powerful and elegant, is a perfect expression of the vintage with a great potential for ageing.
