Castello Monaci Piluna Primitivo Salento IGT 2016

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Milky oak on the nose with nice herb and spicy tones lurking in the background though this smells a bit acidic and hard. On entry this is dry, clean and rather tight yet with nicely balanced notes of vanilla and hard blackberry fruit. The wood comes off as a bit raw with drying tannins but the finish is spicy and complex with notes that recall cherry Dr. Pepper. 88pts

The tufa (‘rocks’) of local soils contribute structure to the wine, aid in drainage for the vines, and reflect the light, helping the sun’s work for the vines. Dug out of subterranean rock, the geometric-shaped cellar houses 1,000 barriques and modern temperature-controlled systems that allow small parcels of grapes to be vinified separately. Read less

I will not pretend to know what I am talking about by mentioning "notes" and "aromas", but the very first time I tasted this wonderful wine there was just one bottle to share between several people. It was so exceptional that I could not get it out of my mind. I had to have some more. I went from store to store looking for it in my area but was unable to locate it. Finally I special ordered a case which I thought I might regret as I might get tired of it. But I did not. In fact I ordered another case. Everyone I have shared this wine with has loved it! Just try one bottle, but beware--you may get hooked!

Summary "Piluna" translates into "pot of clay" or an ancient container used to store water or wine. Terroir: This 100% Primitivo is grown from vineyards surrounding the ancient Castello Monaci estate. Soils are a blend of dry clay, volcanic gravel and limestone. Vines are forced deep in search of water, leading to low yields and rich, fragrant wines. Vinification: Harvest is done by hand prior to dawn to preserve sugar levels and avoid the hot sunlight. The grapes are vinified in small stainless steel tanks prior to 6 months of aging in 75% stainless steel and 25% 2nd and 3rd use French oak. 300,000 bottles produced. Additional Information The 2016 Piluna has broad, ripe black fruit and spice aromas, with notes of pepper, toasty vanilla and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, the wine has a robust, concentrated character, a firm structure, and small black fruit and licorice notes on the aftertaste. - Winery

Castello Monacis 2011 Primitivo Piluna emerges from the glass with blackberries, tar, licorice and spices. It also reveals a bit more varietal delineation than the Negroamaru Maru. At $12.00 a bottle, it also happens to be a terrific value. The 2011 Piluna has broad, ripe black fruit and spice aromas, with notes of pepper, toasty vanilla and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, the wine has a robust, concentrated character, a firm structure, and small black fruit and licorice notes on the aftertaste. - Winery

This bold effort opens with notes of jammy blackberry and prune. It is soft and slightly sweet, with flavors of of plush fruit and cinnamon.
