Very disappointed. It tasted strongly of rubber with caramel to me. I tried it after a couple of days, thinking it maybe needed to breathe. No luck. Maybe I got a bad bottle?
I had friends over the other day and tasted several Puglia wines. 2004 Notarparnaro, 2000 Patrimonio, Feline 2006, and Artas 2006. Everyone voted the Artas as the best wine. I got the Artas for a very good price from an online shop in Germany. The next day we wanted to order more and for some odd reason they were sold out! Someone must have beaten me to it.
Dark ruby red. The nose is giving up an array of wonderful notes including spices, flowers, tobacco, leather and cherries. The mouth feel is excellent, pure silk and opulence, a very sweet wine with fine tannins and the longest Primitivo finish I've experienced. Good job. 91 Points
External Reviews for Castello Monaci Artas Salento IGT Primitivo
Terroir: The Castello Monaci Artas Primitivo is sourced from vineyards surrounding the ancient Castello Monaci estate. The dry, limestone-based soils combine with alberello-trained vines and the hot arid climate to produce remarkably low yields and extraordinarily rich wines. Vinification: Harvest is done at night to avoid exposing the picked grapes to the intense heat of the southern sun. The grapes are macerated at cold temperature for 15+ days with frequent pumping over of the must to encourage rich extraction of flavor and color. Following fermentation the wine is aged for 6 months in French oak and other 6 months in casks followed by an additional 6 months in bottle prior to release. 9,500 bottles produced. Additional Information: The 2011 Castello Monaci Artas is explosively rich and layered with ripe, sun-drenched berry fruit, black pepper spice and smoky oak. - Winery
The estates top of the line 2009 Primitivo Salento Artas is quite pretty. A juicy, perfumed wine, the Artas stands out for its varietal nuance and expressiveness. There is plenty of depth to the 2009, but no sense of heaviness. Once again, the Artas is a standout. The 2006 Primitivo Piluna is a wine of uncommon beauty. This vibrant, pure red shimmers on the palate with layers of dark cherries, sweet herbs, licorice and tobacco. It offers outstanding length and terrific balance. Readers who haven't discovered Primitivo owe it to themselves to do so. This is a great starting point. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.
A very precise mineral quality that recalls slate roof and granite defines this wine and delivers a linear and drying experience overall. The wine has charm and elegance with lingering spice notes on the finish.
The 2007 Primitivo Pilna flows from the glass with waves of dark red fruit. This generous, ripe wine should continue to drink well for at least another year or two. It is another incredibly delicious value-priced red from Castello Monaci. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.
"For a second year in a row, the Artas returns home with a Three Glass Crown. This 100% Primitivo shows a garnet ruby appearance and a complex nose of fig, pomegranate and plum jam. This palate is full, rich and fruity with a long, refreshing, dynamic finish." ** Only 10 in Stock **
