Castello Fonterutoli Siepi 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Saw dust, plum and rosemary greet the nose which smells a bit obviously woody. Tight in the mouth with finely polished tannins supporting flavors of strawberries and plums with light mineral accents on the long finish, plummy and a bit floral, really fine persistence. If I was less familiar with the trajectory I would be more underwhelmed with this but knowing how it ages this looks to be in fine shape. 89-92

This offers up lovely aromatic complexity with dried and fresh herbs, sweet oak, leather, spicy wood, jammy black currant and a bit of baked plum. It is fresh, bright and complex. A touch soft, perhaps a little dilute and just a little loose on the palate, but still nicely fresh with a little plummy, almost nectarine tinged fruit. The tannins seem a touch dry but remain covered by the fruit which wears coffee, vanilla and spice wood tones. The back end is more fruited and shows a flash of tomato leaf before the wood takes control. 89pts

Pretty oaky on the nose, rubbery, leathery, though with lovely notes of coriander, plum and herb. Turns bretty fairly quickly though with underlying notes of incense, spicy wood, leather and coffee. There’s also a slight musty note which might be a touch of TCA but the poopy bretty covers it well. Soft, rich fruit on entry lends this a slightly sweet impression. With nice tannins and good acid this is a bit compact but fresh and sort of muscular, full of blackberry fruit and a touch of fungi. With air this turns a bit hard with tannins that are a little woody and stiff on the back end, and while there’s a nice bit of sweetness still here, there seems to be more structure than fruit. 88pts

A little jammy on the nose with blackberry, black currant fruit topped with a bit of bbq sauce, tomato, plum sauce, crystallized spice and burnt sugar. There is a touch of oxidation here along with some herbal nuances adding complexity. Light on entry and fairly elegant with a nice balance of wild berry and plum flavor which fades throughout the evening. There’s still a bit of wood tannin lending this a chewy texture and the oak does pop on the modest finish. A lot going on the nose but the palate is showing signs of falling apart. 88pts

With it's more opaque color and bronzing rim this even looks different than the preceding wines. opening with an intensely spicy character this retains some of the more familiar Sangiovese notes of earth, tobbaco and spice while addin a bit of stewy fruit and cocoa like tones with nuanced black pepper and deep roast meat notes. The wood here is a bit heavy still and comes off as resinous. In the mouth this is easy with soft tannins and ok acids but a touch hollow in the middle. Darker cocoa, earth, plum and vanilla doominate the palate with good intensity, not terribly complex but fun and easy with a clear, crisp finish that continues the cocoa theme and ends on a green melon rind finale. With dinner the nose offers up pruny fruit with great hints of black pepper and dried porcini over a base of roast green tomato/tomatillo, still a bit oaky. In the mouth the wine is big and fudgy, a bit hot and a bit clumsy but like your favorite 5 year old nephew still lovable. The plum and cocoa core of fruit adds an herbal flourish before leading into the shortish finish. A crowd pleaser to be sure but this wine has never been better than it was on release when the Sangiovese and merlot were in harmony. It has turned into a rather decent Italian merlot more than anything. 2008-2012

I had this one by myself for an end of summer cellar run that included typical antipasti and a big thick strip steak to end the grilling season with. Needed something big, mature with some spice and acidity and this delivered. The color is very dark, drinking this outside at sundown didn't allow for complete inspection but healthy and dark it was. The nose starts off with lots of leather and spice and the palate is a bit ungenerous straight from the bottle yet the structure is there with balance acidity and resolving soft tannins and a gentle hint of obvious wood on the finish. Develops a bit of an herbal note on the nose with some underlying marzipan and fleshes out in the mouth retaining that slightly raspy sangio acidity I needed for dinner. After about an hour this is absolutely popping with deep mocha topped nose over roasted frutti di bosci. Still some oaken spice adding interest with some fresh almond competing with limestone and floral notes in the mouth and on the finish. This has turned really red fruited on the attack with over-ripe raspberry and plum notes leading to a palate impression that is perfectly mature, with nuanced acidity and tannin adding grab on the fairly long and bright amarena finish. Not supremely complex but not creamy either. Fresh, balanced and delicious with a slight rusticity that adds to the character and depth of the wine.

Lots of vegetal notes, lively and bright, a bit of oak spice. Nice balance and intensity, with an assertive overlay of green vegetal and herb notes of lovely faded cherry fruit. Elegant, open and smooth, nicely resolved and in a very nice place, the Merlot really helps out here, adding softness and roundness to an obviously lean and austere structure. Plum skin, bright fruit. Fun wine, not the most complex, but lovely, showing smoky oak balanced by lovely currant fruit and herbal notes on the moderately long finish. 92pts

Very fruity on the nose, but also very peppery. Tannic but with upfront fruit.

Lots of sediment, aroma like worcestershire sauce, chocolate, and chili peppers. Very fruity on the palate, with heavy cherry and strawberry notes, which continue strongly into the finish. Great!

this is a wine for Fonterutoli buffs, a pioneer wine as I call it. As its name suggests inky. its not the standard chianti by any means but a blend. I walked on the Mazzei Fonterutoli lands each morning when I lived in the area and came to know its chalky vineyards well. This is a wine with staying power. vegetal yes, with smokiness a little spice and tobacco and cherry fruit, its a big wine, and Merlot is expressed in its best way here. its a wine to pull out with a steak and with friends who are not new to complex wines.

Siepi 2006 - 92 Points, Wine Advocate/ The 2006 Siepi is particularly beautiful in this vintage. The wine reveals tons of clarity, depth and precision in its violets, blackberries, minerals and French oak, with remarkable balance in between the fruit, acid and tannins. This full-bodied, vibrant Siepi could use a few years in bottle, but the wine’s impeccable balance means it can be enjoyed sooner than that, especially if the bottle is opened well in advance. This is a terrific effort from proprietor Filippo Mazzei, consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini and their team. Siepi is Sangiovese and Merlot that spent 18 months in French oak.

"Siepi" Toscana IGT 2006 - 91 Points, International Wine Cellar/ Dark red with a paler rim. Musky aromas of earth, underbrush and tobacco, with livelier redcurrant and blueberry aromas emerging with air. The densely textured palate shows more red fruits than black, with complicating hints of cigar box and balsamic vinegar. The wine's seamless tannins contribute to a surprisingly forward impression considering its youth, but this is a very impressive mouthfeel that offers the advantage of early accessibility.

/ There's just something about this 50-50 Sangiovese-Merlot blend that makes it absolutely irresistible. The fullness, the harmony, the intensity of aromas and the long, fruity persistency on the finish work together to produce one of the great modern super Tuscans.

"Siepi" Toscana IGT 2006 - Tre Bicchieri, Gambero Rosso Guide to Italian Wines/ ... The wine, from a six-hectare vineyard selection, is a half sangiovese-half merlot blend. The nose tempts with black berry fruit enriched with chocolate and vanilla notes before the palate unveils its essential concentration in dense flavours that can only improve with the passage of time.

Siepi 2012 - 98 Points, JamesSuckling.com/ Fantastic depth of fruit and mouthfeel to this red with blackberries, blueberries, spices, walnuts and fresh herb character. Orange peel, too. Full body, round and savory tannins and a mouth watering finish. A blend of sangivoese and merlot. Easily the best Siepi ever, and it celebrates 20 years of production. Drink or hold.

Siepi 2005/ From Mazzei's historic estate in Chianti Classico, this 50/50 blend of sangiovese and merlot grows in marl and sandstone soils. The wine's tannins feel ironclad when first poured, then high-toned red berries emerge with air, enriched by notes of sandalwood and spice. Cellar this for up to a decade, or decant a bottle for braised pork shoulder.
