Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico 2014

Member Review by Nicki Gig:

Cherry vanilla tea on the nose with a teeny bit of spice. Beautiful red fruit nose of raspberries cherries and sweet spice. Palate is nicely balanced medium bodied some hints of red and black fruit, tea leaves classic characteristics of chianti Classico but better and more complex. Wonderful with my Italian dinner.

Castello di Fonterutoli:
Fonterutoli is located 5 km south of Castellina in Chianti (Siena), on the hills facing the Val d'Elsa, in the heart of the Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, it still retains its original form, that of a tranquil country village: a cluster of houses, the church of San Miniato and the villa, built at the end of the 1500s where the medieval castle once stood. Cherry nose laced with eucalyptus, freshly crushed red berry and oak notes. On the palate, nice toast and spice with black cherry and raspberry flavors. Youthful fruit with good structure and balance. Nice! 4/14/12

Ruby red, on the nose, a melange of mineral scents, dark cherry fruit, fresh and medium bodied. Long finish. Tuscany Sangiovese&merlot blend.

There’s a sweetness to this red, with flavors of black cherry, cedar and incense joined by a hint of chocolate. Supple, with underlying tannins and a long finish. A modern style. Best from 2013 through 2020.

The 2010 Chianti Classico shows lovely depth and power in its expressive dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol and licorice. Clean veins of minerality give the wine its considerable focus and energy. This is an especially understated wine from Fonterutoli, but it works. A clean, vibrant finish of stone fruits, flowers and spices resonates on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015.

A beautiful wine from a great vintage, this reasonably-priced Chianti Classico opens with soft tones of ripe cherry and red fruits backed by spice, leather and chocolate. The wine shows lush, smooth opulence on the soft yet persistent finish.

The 2008 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is impressive juice. A melange of mineral-infused scents add complexity to the dark cherry fruit. Medium in body, the Chianti Classico shows wonderful freshness, clarity and verve. While it doesn't appear to have the density to support extended cellaring, this is one of the most finessed Chiantis I tasted from the uneven 2008 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016.
