The nose is tight but shows nice depth to the black fruits and integrated oak tones. In the mouth this is very smooth with moderately intense, somewhat brambly, blackberry tones supported by modest tannins. On the mid-palate there’s a hint of herbaciousness and slightly peppery red currant fruit that carry a cinnamon note on to the finish. The finish shows more tannic presence and if moderately long with a nice freshness to the flavors. An easy and bright Balifico. 89pts
One-third Cabernet Sauvignon, two thirds Sangiovese di Volpaia, a clone from the property. This offers up the classic scents of these Sangiovese/Cab blends yet even at this relatively high percentage of Cabernet it does not dominate the nose. There are balanced notes of leathery fruit and cool, crisp Cabernet notes with a gentle edge of tomato leaf. Gaining a bit more depth with air the lightly smoky, spicy chili notes of Cabernet become more assertive yet in the mouth the feel is that of the austere and sapid Sangiovese but with the deep black currant fruit of Cabernet augmenting the cherry tones of the Sangiovese well. This retains juicy acids and has good length in a rounder and fruitier style than the other wines. Definitely a crowd-pleaser and while perhaps as complex as the other Castello di Volpaia wines this is a bit on the smooth and polished side. 90pts
Rich, fresh and floral aromas of red fruit and leather. Flavors are smooth, mellow and warm, with lots of dark fruit, some drying tannins, leather and oak, finishing with a dollop of cherry cough syrup.
Big sweet zinny nose. Gentile and lean in the mouth with exceptional balance and a slightly medicinal long meandering finish.

Dark red. Lead pencil, black pepper and cardamom aromas are enshrouded in a delicate oaky veneer. Very clean and fresh on the palate, with pure flavors of black cherry, blackcurrant, cedar and woodsy underbrush, and decent persistence on the smoothly tannic finish.
Fresh and balanced, with blackberry and chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a clean finish. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best after 2008.
The nicely concentrated 1990 Balifico is a tightly knit, spicy, medium-bodied wine with an obvious influence from new oak. It requires another 1-2 years of cellaring; it should last for a decade.
