Castello di Volpaia Sangiovese Blend Vino da Tavola Coltassala 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Produced from 95% Sangiovese and 5% mammolo. In contrast to the open and giving 2004 CCR this bottle opens very slowly with intriguing notes of vanilla tinged jammy blackberry fruit that is framed with gentle toast notes and a very fine mineral vein that grows in intensity. After about an hour this really blossoms with fine perfumed scents of violets, hot beach sand, hot iron, subtle cinnamon and a light top note of fine cigar smoke. In the mouth this will appeal to those who prefer balance and precision over power and weight. Opening with great cut, this it tight and almost tough with emerging notes of oyster shell and very small red currant fruit but the balance and definition are wonderful and the sapidity and austerity of the wine keep one coming back again and again. With time the wine fills out a touch and gains a sneaky length as the tight core of fruit turns towards blackberry and ends with a subtle mint tinged hard candy note. 92pts

Castello di Volpaia:
Just as in the 12th Century, the village itself still plays an essential role in our wine and oil production. Just as in the 12th Century, the village itself still plays an essential role in our wine and oil production. The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses up to the ceiling in the latest equipment and all connected by an amazing underground "wineduct." Thus Volpaia is not just another magnificent tourist attraction, but a thriving hive of activity whose inhabitants are all directly or indirectly involved in the winery. Volpaia is committed to Organic farming and is certified organic for all its wines. But the environmetal project of Volpaia is much wider: - the genetical differences of all its indigenous Sangiovese clones are preserved into a special collection, a selected parcel were 22 different clones are grown on three different rootstock - all the winery i located within the ancient buildings of the village preserving the integrity of the architectural inheritage of Volpaia rather than builind new facilities - all the workers of Volpaia live in the village where the winery has ronovated appartmens for the employees Read less

Light aromatic tones on the nose with a touch of wood spice. In the mouth there’s good fruit with nice stemmy, strawberry top tones up front balanced by cigar box notes that add some sweetness to the fruit across the mid-palate. The fruit lacks some definition though the finish is juicy and crisp with slightly under-ripe strawberry tones. This has good length and is youthful and nervous but will never be a blockbuster. 90pts

This also still shows its oak but with rich notes of camphor, violets, black raspberry, and oystershells all adding to the perfume. On the palate this is very round and lush with a nice feel. The structure is nicely soften and well integrated into he remaining fruit. The tannins on the finish were really refreshingly crisp, finely facetted. A lovely wine that was probably better a few years ago but it’s so well balanced it is slowly fading away instead of flailing over the cliff’s edge. 89pts

Toasty cocoa with nice fruit up front. Finishes on strong acid. Needs more time in the bottle. - WS Grand Tour 2011
