Just as in the 12th Century, the village itself still plays an essential role in our wine and oil production. The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses up to the ceiling in the latest equipment and all connected by an amazing underground "wineduct." Thus Volpaia is not just another magnificent tourist attraction, but a thriving hive of activity whose inhabitants are all directly or indirectly involved in the winery. Volpaia is committed to Organic farming and is certified organic for all its wines. But the environmetal project of Volpaia is much wider: - the genetical differences of all its indigenous Sangiovese clones are preserved into a special collection, a selected parcel were 22 different clones are grown on three different rootstock - all the winery i located within the ancient buildings of the village preserving the integrity of the architectural inheritage of Volpaia rather than builind new facilities - all the workers of Volpaia live in the village where the winery has ronovated appartmens for the employees Read less

A bit estery but quite intense and fruity with wild strawberry tones on the nose with hints of leather and forest floor. With air and adds a nice mineral/rain water note and a hint of flowers. Very light fresh and pure with marginal tannins and juicy acids that are a bit hard on their own. Finishes with a touch of herb and sand. Correct and simple if a touch lean. 84pts

A touch meaty and first then turning very floral with a touch of wood spice, quite spicy fruit, black cherry, sweet almost red-hot cinnamon (-), very floral. Medium light on entry with nice acids and soft tannins. There is good depth of flavor with twisty herbal and mineral veins that offset the sour cherry/ red currant fruits. A classic austere character that is fairly richly flavored and finishes with nutty, slightly bitter amarena cherry tones. 88pts

The nose showed red berries, animal musk, herbs and a hint of eraser. On the palate, it was juicy with red fruits, cedar and inner floral notes. The long, lingering finish showed sour fruits and silky tannin. This 100% Sangiovese was highly enjoyable.

Quite rustic on the nose with burnt wood and lots of ripe cherries. Deep, dark blackberry flavors. Juicy, flavorful and rich, mellowing into chocolate towards the finish.

Cherry nose with burnt twig and forest floor notes. Soft anise flavors to start, medium acidity and quite a light body. This builds over time and the wine finishes with more power on the backend.

Very light nose with hints of cherry. In the mouth this wine is either still too young & closed or one that just doesn't have much fruit to offer, but 2006 leads me to believe the latter. The wine left me wanting and searching for more.
