Castello di Volpaia Indue Toscana 2009

External Review by We Speak Wine:

“Indue,” the Italian word for “the two of us,” expresses the heart and soul of this wine. It is the joint effort of brother and sister duo, Nicolò and Federica Mascheroni Stianti; the marriage of two properties, Castello di Volpaia and Prelius; and the blending of two grape varieties, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Representing the character and personality of the two siblings and the respective properties they each nurture, Indue is the best of both. Vineyard Profile: At Volpaia, in the heart of Chianti Classico, the Sangiovese is grown at 550 meters (1,800 feet) above sea level, resulting in fresh, elegant wine. At Prelius in the Maremma, the Cabernet Sauvignon is grown a mere 3.2 kilometers (two miles) from the Mediterranean sea and 45 meters (150 feet) above sea level, resulting in wine that is supple and juicy. The blend of these grapes, organically grown at both properties, results in a wine demonstrating dramatic complexity and balance. Cultivation: Certified organic Vintage Report: The 2009 vintage was characterized by abundant precipitation up to mid-June followed by a hot, dry season up to October. Ripening was slowed due to hydric stress, particularly in the vineyards with richly textured sandy soil. Grapes were harvested between mid-September and mid-October. Vinification: The best lots were selected from Volpaia and Prelius, vinified separately and aged in French oak barriques and tonneaux. The wines were aged on the lees for eight months, undergoing constant battonage. The blend was then made from the best of the best and put back into barrel to age for 12 months. It was then bottled and aged an additional 12 months before release. Tasting Notes: Indue has a deep ruby color with light shades of violet. The nose is aromatic with great elegance: initially there are notes of cherries and plums, then hints of clove, wood and mineral graphite. In the mouth the wine is big, juicy and rich and always characterized by elegance and finesse. Varietal Composition: 50% Sangiovese 50% Cabernet Sauvignon Production: 2,000 cases (12/750ml) Alcohol: 14.5%

Just as in the 12th Century, the village itself still plays an essential role in our wine and oil production. The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses up to the ceiling in the latest equipment and all connected by an amazing underground "wineduct." The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses up to the ceiling in the latest equipment and all connected by an amazing underground "wineduct." Thus Volpaia is not just another magnificent tourist attraction, but a thriving hive of activity whose inhabitants are all directly or indirectly involved in the winery. Volpaia is committed to Organic farming and is certified organic for all its wines. But the environmetal project of Volpaia is much wider: - the genetical differences of all its indigenous Sangiovese clones are preserved into a special collection, a selected parcel were 22 different clones are grown on three different rootstock - all the winery i located within the ancient buildings of the village preserving the integrity of the architectural inheritage of Volpaia rather than builind new facilities - all the workers of Volpaia live in the village where the winery has ronovated appartmens for the employees Read less
