Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva 2012

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Thick smoke and toasted espresso notes on the nose. Mineral notes of smoked blackberry and black cherry fruit, tart acidity and creamy delicate chocolate and sweet coffee notes towards the finish with cinnamon baking spice. Approachable and easy drinking.

Just as in the 12th Century, the village itself still plays an essential role in our wine and oil production. The interiors of its ancient houses, churches, underground passages and deconsecrated churches have been discreetly converted into wine cellars, bottling plants and olive presses up to the ceiling in the latest equipment and all connected by an amazing underground "wineduct." Thus Volpaia is not just another magnificent tourist attraction, but a thriving hive of activity whose inhabitants are all directly or indirectly involved in the winery. Volpaia is committed to Organic farming and is certified organic for all its wines. But the environmetal project of Volpaia is much wider: - the genetical differences of all its indigenous Sangiovese clones are preserved into a special collection, a selected parcel were 22 different clones are grown on three different rootstock - all the winery i located within the ancient buildings of the village preserving the integrity of the architectural inheritage of Volpaia rather than builind new facilities - all the workers of Volpaia live in the village where the winery has ronovated appartmens for the employees Read less

Ripe raspberries and cherries on the nose showing pure and fresh with clumps of smooth clay and earth. Deep full and rich palate of creamy red raspberry and cherry, light licorice notes and a hint of herb on the finish with a touch of ripe acidity that balances the ripe fruit well. 90 pts

This has a strong, hard scent with big soil tones and a light underlay of smoke and cool, crisp lichen and mossy notes but not showing a lot of fruit at this point. Chewy and a bit soft in the mouth with some peachy tannins across the mid-palate that adds a nice accent to the black raspberry fruit. There’s a nice sweetness on the finish and this is well balanced but neither complex nor particularly deep. 87pts

The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva straddles a fine line between modernity and traditionalism. Aromas are chiseled and defined with bold cherry, Spanish cedar, moist tobacco and pressed red flower. The fruit layering is rich, but never over-the-top. In fact, the wine feels downright elegant, tight and pristine overall. It’s a pure expression of Sangiovese. Anticipated maturity: 2014–2022.

This enticing red offers floral, strawberry, raspberry and mineral aromas and flavors. Elegant and harmonious, showing no shortage of structure, this has fine complexity, with a lingering aftertaste of berry and mineral. Best from 2015 through 2025.

Blueberry and blackberry flavors are married to a lean, wiry frame. Hints of flowers and mineral add dimension, and this closes down on the finish. Needs time. To be released spring 2012.
