Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva Premier 5 2008
Made from grapes from a further selection, first in the vineyard and afterward in the winery, this Riserva consists of Sangiovese (90%) and Canaiolo and Colorino (10%). It has excellent potential for aging. This wine is widely distributed on the domestic and international markets.
Castello di Monsanto is one of the most respected estates in Tuscany and one of the top producers of traditional Chianti Classico Riserva. Located midway between Florence & Siena, the estate lies on the westernmost edge of the Chianti Classico zone, one of the best areas for Chianti. The estate itself is a landmark, with its distinctive hilltop castle.
91 Points: Starts off with roasted (not stewed) black cherry, a coffee undertone, and savory dried herbs. On the palate there is dried black cherry, a little powdered cocoa on the mid palate, moderate acidity, and fine tannins. Finishes very nicely with a pleasant grip, lingering dried herbs,tobacco, and that subtle dusty cocoa note, all supported by understated acidity. Later,rose petals distinctly on the nose. Complex, balanced, and impressive at this age and price point.
The wine itself has a lovely deep ruby color in the glass and presents a nose of leather, licorice and some floral notes that almost feel chewy as you breath them in. The taste is somewhat fruit forward, with flavors or ripe plum and tart cherry at the front end, transitioning to some wonderful earthy, spicy notes midpalate. The well structured tannins and bright acidity make for a lovely smooth, long finish. It's exactly what you would expect from a nice Chianti Classico. The nose showed ripe crushed raspberries with leather and hint of roasted nuts. On the palate it had a medium body but with acidity to spare which counter the red berry fruit and shortened it's length. Herbs and red berries lingered through the finish with hints of tannin. I doubt this wine improve much with time, but at this price, it's worth putting a couple away to see.

Bright red. Delicate aromas of redcurrant, blueberry and violet. Fresh and refined, with lovely purity and verve to the red cherry, redcurrant and floral flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and great acid lift.
When owner Fabrizio Bianchi purchased this ancient estate 1962 he began a transformation that continues to this day. The vineyards have all been revitalized and the winemaking is modern and up-to-date. He was one of the first to eliminate white grapes from his Chianti blend. The blend is 90% Sangiovese, 7% Canaiolo and 3% Colorino. Instead of large Slavonian casks the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barriques. Last year the 2007 was number 31 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2011. This 2008 also scored 92 points in the Wine Advocate who said "The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva is a very pretty, centered wine.
