What to Expect

Sangiovese's claim to fame is its role as the heart of Chianti, Brunello and many Super Tuscan wines though it is gaining ground as a varietal wine around the globe. When grown in a suitable location the grape's soft tannins, succulent acidity and moderately intense cherry and herb flavors make Sangiovese very easy to drink as well as supremely versatile at the dinner table.

Winemakers Notes

Tasting Notes: The estate’s mid-weight, silky-textured 2003 Chianti Classico Riserva presents attractive notes of super- ripe red fruits, grilled herbs and spices on an ample, yet classically built frame that captures the generous warmth of the vintage while maintaining a sense of freshness as well as restraint. Showing outstanding length on the palate, roundness from the oak, notable purity and terrific overall balance, it is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next decade or so.

Reviews

The 2005 Chianti Classico Riserva reveals a profile of red berries, herbs, crushed flowers and spices. The wine possesses an attractive up-front personality and finessed tannins, but it does taper off a bit on the mid-palate. In this rain-plagued vintage Monsanto did not produce its Riserva Il Poggio, and the best fruit from that site was added to this Riserva bottling, which was aged in a variety of used French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2017.

Winemaker Laura Bianchi makes an old world style Chianti Classico that is full on the palate and has lots of black fruit flavors.
