What to Expect

Sangiovese's claim to fame is its role as the heart of Chianti, Brunello and many Super Tuscan wines though it is gaining ground as a varietal wine around the globe. When grown in a suitable location the grape's soft tannins, succulent acidity and moderately intense cherry and herb flavors make Sangiovese very easy to drink as well as supremely versatile at the dinner table.

In the glass, the 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG is a deep ruby red color. Thenose is filled with highly complex and intense aromas of wilted violet, red fruits andspicy aromas of black pepper and sweet licorice. The palate is mouth-filling andwarm, with the red fruit flavors balanced by round tannins, a fresh acidity and a longfinish. This is a classic Tuscan vintage - warm days and cool nights were theright conditions for an even ripening of the fruit, resulting in this wellbalanced wine. - Giancarlo Roman, Winemaker

Wine Tasting NotesRich purple and burgundy in color, this varietal has lingering aromas of aged leather and cedar with a hint of sour-cherry syrup, spiced with black pepper and nutmeg. This wine is bold and spicy on the palate, with rounded blackberry accents and hummus flavors. Smooth tannins, and a clean body and structure are well balance with the taste's dry sensation. Enjoy with roasted portabella mushrooms, roasted pork, or rabbit. This wine can be enjoyed at present but with proper cellaring will improve and soften over the next five years.

This Chianti is what every Merlot strives to be. Out of all the wines I've had, I'd say this is one of the few that have such a nice vibrant ruby red color to it. I spent way too much time just staring at the wine, it's really quite fabulous. It's very fragrant on the nose, with a nice pepper taste, as well as a hint of rose petal taste. It's also got a watercress flavor that is oftentimes associated with Merlots, only here, it's not overpowering, and adds a nice minerally flavor to the wine. It's got average astringency, and it's a little hot.
