Castello di Fonterutoli:
Fonterutoli is located 5 km south of Castellina in Chianti (Siena), on the hills facing the Val d'Elsa, in the heart of the Chianti Classico. On the main square next to the ancient church is the family villa, surrounded by the charming village apartments and suites managed as luxury b&b that can be rented individually or as a single unit. Has lots of berry, coffee and spice character, with hints of black licorice. Full-bodied, with rich, chewy tannins and loads of chocolate, coffee and berry character. Lasts for minutes on the palate. Big and broad-shouldered. This is the best Siepi since its first vintage. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best after 2008. 2,500 cases made. -JSThere's just something about this 50-50 Sangiovese-Merlot blend that makes it absolutely irresistible. The fullness, the harmony, the intensity of aromas and the long, fruity persistency on the finish work together to produce one of the great modern super Tuscans. - M.L.(merlot/sangiovese blend) Saturated black-ruby. Typical Siepi nose of black plum, black pepper, espresso and vanilla-caramel oak. More dark chocolate and coffee in the mouth, with a sweetening influence of ripe black cherry. Fat, layered and finely tannic. A bit more acid spine might have given this more detail, but it ranks as one of the more refined Siepis I remember at a similar stage of development.Fonterutoli's Siepi is the most successful of these 2004s. A blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot, it opens with a perfumed nose followed by layers of sweet dark fruit and toasted oak notes, showing notable persistence on the palate and a stylish personality. It saw 18 months' aging in small French oak, 70% of which was new. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
