Castello di Bossi Corbaia 09 2011

External Review:

A big, juicy red, bursting with black cherry, plum and woodsy flavors. The tannins are formidable, as much from oak as fruit, but there's plenty of fruit to match. Balanced toward the tannins and alcohol. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2014 through 2020.

Made with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2009 Corbaia is a richly layered red that reveals elegant tones of red rose, cherry, freshly milled black pepper, prune and dried blackberry. This is a multifaceted and fascinating wine with a firm tannic backbone surrounded by fleshy fruit, bitter chocolate and exotic spice. The 2009 vintage shows a uniquely plump quality of fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2015–2030.

Too young to drink now, this blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon shows all the requisites to be an age-worthy wine. The quality of the fruit is rich, the acidity is bright, and the tannins will carry the wine forward during its slow evolution.

A ripe style, offering black currant and cassis flavors, with loads of sweet spices. This is international in style, though the tannins on the finish lack polish. Shows some heat. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2012 through 2016.

Vintage: 2008 05/20/2014

The 2008 Corbaia is striking in this vintage. A delicate, graceful bouquet gives the impression of femininity, until layers of fruit hit the palate with relentless energy and focus. The 2008 impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. The tannins are still huge at this stage, but I sense that as they melt away the wine’s true pedigree will begin to emerge. This is a great, great showing from Castello di Bossi. Corbaia is 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in new French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2016–2028.

Corbaia is a delicious blend of Sangiovese (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon that shows compact but well-etched lines of forest fruit, bramble, cranberry and sharp, savory spice. The tannins are firm, tight and need a few more years to unwind.

A formidable, black wine melding sangiovese with cabernet sauvignon, this holds all its heady, pungent fruit in a tight structure. The austere tannins need bottle age or a well-marbled steak to allow the wine to show its best.
