Castello di Ama Merlot Toscana IGT Vigna l'Apparita 1994

Member Review by Philip James:

Richer and rounder than some of the newer vintages. Surprisingly bright strawberry flavors. Cherry and even banana. Very fruity for its age. Acids on the finish, with flavors of iron, blood, stone, cigar wrapper and cedar. The acids are beginning to mellow.

Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

'94 is an orphan vintage for Tuscany...and the top winemakers find a way (usually by radically reducing yield) to produce superlative wines even in exceedingly difficult conditions. This example of the Apparita is an excellent example. Typifies the tinge of dark baseline grilled meat and leather for a top Italian Merlot as well as a light citrus/floral nose with a perfect round creme englaise and blueberry mid-body.
