Castello di Ama Gran Selezione Chianti Classico 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Powerful, pure and complex on the nose with rich aromas of leather, a bit of meatiness, stones, and rich red fruits. Elegant and yet powerful in the mouth with light fresh fruit framed with mossy edges and flecks of mineral earth This is really making a statement that power is not the end all with its gorgeous purity of red berry fruit, fine tannins, and real acid driven energy in the mouth. The finish is long and shows a hint of dried fruit, almost prune like complexity along with hints of leather and tobacco. A gorgeous wine. 94pts

“A place of cultic importance in the wine world. We Italians often complain that we do not have our own Chateaux Margaux, our Romanée Conti, our Opus One. But we are wrong, for we do have here in Italy some wine “houses” that are something better, something beyond the normal cellar. Relatively few, perhaps, but true domains of Bacchus where everything is utterly flawless, where time assumes the feel of history, the memory of timeless impressions, the quintessential ingredient in the evolution of wine. drank October 2007 / beautiful deep red with intriguing nose / took some time to open up but picked up pine scents at times / dates, figs, and mild tobacco / very smooth & easy-drinking

The nose showed vibrant red fruits, florist shop, leather and potpourri. On the palate, I found dried strawberry and spice. This wine somehow came across as young and full of life. It was a pleasure to taste and should continue to develop for many years to come.

A ruby red that is at the same time luminous, lively, and intense. The bouquet is composed of wild red berry fruit. A gorgeous, aromatic marriage of fruit and spice mark an impressive attack, in a wine that is overall refined and stylish.

A rich, ripe style that starts out supple, sporting cherry, tobacco and tea flavors. There's still some burly tannins underneath, which emerge on the finish, but overall this is long and balanced. Drink now through 2020.

Amarsquo;s 2003 Chianti Classico is a powerful, super-ripe effort. A dark ruby, it presents sweet dark cherry and tobacco notes on an ample frame, with excellent concentration on the palate although the finish is marked by the hard tannins of the vintage. The wine did soften somewhat with air, yet my impression is that it will provide its best drinking relatively early. In 2002 Ama did not produce its single-vineyard wines and the estatersquo;s best fruit ended up in the normal bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2008ndash;2015.

A well-crafted, superb Chianti Classico. Totally fruit-driven. Beautiful aromas of plum, leaf and cherry. medium- to full-bodied, with medium, fine tannins and a silky mouthfeel. Best from 2001 through 2004.

The 2007 Chianti Classico Castello di Ama is fabulous. There is so much going on in the glass, as endless layers of perfumed dark red fruit caress the palate in stunning style. The wine’s precision, elegance and overall sense of harmony are all first class. Smoke, tar and roses add the final layers of complexity on the finish. Today the wine is mostly remarkable for its exceptional silkiness; readers will have to wait at least a few years for the aromatics and flavors to develop tertiary nuances. The Castello is a wine that sets a new standard for what is possible within the Chianti Classico appellation. Anticipated maturity: 2015–2027.

Intensely fruity nose with crushed raspberries and plums. Full-bodied, with loads of fruit and velvety tannins. This is exceptional for the vintage. Ama sets the high water mark for quality Chianti Classico. Best after 2005.
