Castello di Ama Chianti Classico San Lorenzo Gran Selezione 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

"Offers a combination of power and elegance, with a racy feel. Notes of wild cherry, strawberry and rose, with leafy, woodsy flavors, permeate this driving red. The finish is long, but this needs time to shed the tannins. Well-defined from start to finish. Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Merlot...95" WS 10/14

Castello di Ama:
“A place of cultic importance in the wine world. We Italians often complain that we do not have our own Chateaux Margaux, our Romanée Conti, our Opus One. But we are wrong, for we do have here in Italy some wine “houses” that are something better, something beyond the normal cellar. Relatively few, perhaps, but true domains of Bacchus where everything is utterly flawless, where time assumes the feel of history, the memory of timeless impressions, the quintessential ingredient in the evolution of wine. Bright medium red-ruby. Pretty aromas of dark cherry, violet, coffee and sexy spices. Suave and fine-grained, with pliant black and red berry and floral flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. The firmly structured finish features lingering notes of dark plum, redcurrant and sexy oak, along with mounting, slightly tough tannins and a very strong earthy note. Cellar this for at least five years to allow it to smooth out.

Impeccably balanced and extremely elegant, this opens with a multifaceted fragrance of perfumed berry, crushed blue flower, menthol, baking spice and just a hint of new leather. The graceful palate offers layers of succulent wild cherry, white pepper, licorice, mint and eucalyptus alongside firm, polished tannins and fresh acidity. It’s sleek and already tempting but hold for complexity. Drink 2016–2030.

Compared to the 2011 vintage, the 2010 Chianti Classico Vigneto Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is a wine of good depth and focus thanks to the cooler vintage. The bouquet shows standard Chianti Classico aromas of bright fruit and cherry with offbeat tones of Pecorino cheese rind and white chocolate thrown into the mix. In the mouth, it shows extraction and power.

Offers a combination of power and elegance, with a racy feel. Notes of wild cherry, strawberry and rose, with leafy, woodsy flavors, permeate this driving red. The finish is long, but this needs time to shed the tannins. Well-defined from start to finish. Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Merlot. Best from 2017 through 2030.
