Castello d'Albola Chianti Classico 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo A bit flat on the nose showing off some old wood tones and a bit of spice character as well. Decidedly flat in the mouth with lots of candied medicinal and herbal flavors layered over dark black cherry fruit this is rather short and inelegant but not overtly offensive. 83pts

Purchased at Binny's, 12/2016. This bottle was opened at Power's Italian dinner night. This vintage was not much different than the 2009 I consumed a couple of years ago. For a classico there was just middle of the road talent in this bottle.

A bit on the bland side without much flavor, structure or body.

I truly enjoyed sipping from this average bottle while watching LSU win ugly over Alabama in a 3+ hour overtime struggle that set offensive football back a couple decades, in spite of rule changes during the same period that make scoring easier. I had no dog in the fight, but this Chianti help me survive the boredom of 15 total points from another "game of the century". Please.

Bright garnet hue, offering aromas of dry plums and chocolate; flavor profile has notes of plums, dried cherries and orange peel, supported by good acidity to a soft, integrated finish.

Situated in Radda in Chianti, the heart of the Chianti Classico DOCG appellation, where grape cultivation has a legacy dating back to the time of the Etruscans. In the 15th century, the Acciaiuoli family commissioned Castello d'Albola to plant the highest vineyard in Chianti Classico because it was perceived as a symbol of status. Over the centuries, many noble Tuscan families have owned the property and the estate has earned many accolades for its wines. In 1979, the Zonin family acquired Castello d'Albola promising to uphold the estate's excellence for future generations. Castello d'Albola wines have earned the iconic "Gallo Nero" symbol from the Chianti Classico Wine Consortium that guarantees the highest winemaking standards. - Winery

The wine offers a brilliant ruby red color. As time passes, the hue is enriched with garnet tones that, as the years go by, lighten further toward orange with an ochre tint typical of Tuscan wines. The aroma is satisfyingly intense, fine and elegant, with light scents of ripe fruits and violets. As it evolves, the wine develops an appealing bouquet that is full and complex. It possesses a pleasant fullness and an outstanding balance of body and structure. Somewhat austere in its youth, the wine softens with age, becoming velvety and developing prolonged and appealing aromatic persistence.

A light-weight, cherry-flavored red, with moderate tannins for support. Tightens up, with a decent finish. Best from 2013 through 2018. BS - Wine Spectator Magazine 87 Points
