Banfi, truly one of the leaders of the region, takes its usually fine brunello to another level with this huge single vineyard wine, its fully ripe tannins wrapping themselves around the masses of fruit flavors.

Banfi's Riserva is so round and smooth, it's almost impossible to miss the power of the wine, but it's there, completely withheld. And the black fruit is there as well, tight and unyielding, would up in a ball. Sweet tastes of the fruit slip past, hints of what will develop as the structure relents. It's a modern approach to sangiovese grosso, drinkable now as a sleek, textural pleasure, with its flavor in reserve for those willing to wait.

Blackberry and blueberry aromas are focused and ultraclean. Full-bodied, with a deep core of pretty fruit and polished tannins that go on and on. Closed and tight right now, but will open into something very special indeed. Best after 2011.

Blockbuster. Incredibly intense black cherry aromas, with hints of mint and licorice. It soon turns to flowers. Full-bodied, and full-throttled, with masses of tannins and concentrated fruit. Very extracted. Still needs time. Best after 2006.

Wonderful aromas of blackberries, raspberries and flowers. Full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, long finish. A very fine wine. Always a winner. Drink now through 2008.

Dark ruby red. Aromas of blackberry, dried flowers and cherry. Very intense and concentrated nose. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long flavorful finish. Lots of light vanilla and crushed dark fruits on the finish. Solid now, but better with age. Best after 2010.

Winemaker's Notes:

Grape variety 100% Sangiovese Brunello Growing Conditions Balanced rainfall and temperatures through late spring and early summer, followed by a relatively cool and rainy August. Excellent conditions for the pre-harvest and harvest periods. Date of Harvest early October Date of Bottling April 2000 Fermentation Method: In temperature controlled stainless steel tanks Temperature: 27-30°C Length: 14-20 days Malolactic: Yes Length of barrel aging: 30 months Percentage of new barrel: 100% Origin of barrel: Slavonian Oak Casks (Foudres), followed by a brief time in French Oak Barriques (Allier, Chers, Troncais) Technical Characteristics Brix: 23.4 Alcohol content (%): 13 pH: 3.51 Extract (g/lt.): 32.7 Color Intensity: 1128 Method of fining / collage: egg white ACIDITY (g/lt.) Total: Malic: Volatile: 5.82 0.1 0.63 SO2 (mg/lt.) Total: Free: 95 25 Special comment by the wine maker: Surprising richness in soft tannins, attributable to a summer without hydric stress which allowed for full development of polyphenols, and cool temperatures that lengthened the period of maturation, allowing for gradual development of all elements. Tasting Comments: Very intense and deep color, still with youthful hints. The bouquet is very complex and immediately attractive, starting with a good measure of red fruit well integrated with confectionary senses and toasty aromas; with a light note of freshness to autumnal flavors of coffee and chocolate. Full bodied but its muscularity gives a sense of harmony and softness. Dense texture gives it a long and silky finish and afterfinish. An admirable synthesis of power and elegance.
