What to Expect

Brunello di Montalcino is certainly one of the premier expressions of Sangiovese in all of Italy. Unlike other regions, such as Chianti, Brunello must be produced from 100% Sangiovese, in fact the particular clone referred to as Brunello. The vineyards of Brunello cover a large hillside and can be roughly divided into four regions, though things like age of vines and vinification techniques can easily mask the characteristics of each zone. Brunello is uusally a medium full-bodied wine with both strong acidity and tannins that support leathery, subtly spicy tones of coffee and tobacco that add depth to the classic plum and dark cherry fruits.

Winemakers Notes

Grape Varieties: 100% Sangiovese, estate clonal selection.
Description: Intense ruby red in color, acquiring garnet reflections
with age. A lush bouquet, with black fruit
and spice, complemented by tobacco, violet, and
chocolate notes. On the palate, the wine is full
bodied with a velvety mouthfeel and well structured
with supple tannins and good acidity. It
offers rich flavors of plums and cherries followed
by a long finish with nuances of berries and spice.

A wine of distinguished quality, with long aging potential, that is

Reviews

IWC 95 (8/2002): Saturated garnet with dark ruby reflections. Alluring nose of cinnamon, cedar, mint and iris. Wonderfully sweet in the mouth, with remarkably pure, fresh flavors of ripe plum, bing cherry and vanilla bean. Silky tannins and intriguing whiffs of cocoa and cassis on the lingering finish. This unfiltered wine is the first vintage from a single vineyard on the Castello Banfi estate.

WA 88 (12/2002): The deep ruby/purple-colored 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio Alle Mura displays an international bouquet of red and black fruits, wood, licorice, and earth. There is excellent depth and ripeness, but this monolithic Brunello lacks heart and soul. The long finish reveals moderate tannin. Let's see what develops. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2014.
