Nicely fruity on the nose with early notes of mulberry, black fruits and violet over some limestone notes. Rich, ripe yet transparent on the palate with lively, crisp tannins and an edge of austerity that underpins the mulberry, black raspberry and juniper/forest floor-toned palate. This finishes much more in the red fruit end of the spectrum with currant and cherry fruit lingering over a succulent, sandy soil driven base. Archetypal Chianti. 89pts
Aged in third passage barrique This has a wonderful purity to the sweet, slightly candied notes of barely ripe crushed raspberries with hints of medicinal roots, flowers and bay leaves adding contrast. In the mouth this exhibits a light to medium bodied feel and is very fruit driven with a core of black currant and raspberry fruit that exhibits excellent cut and focus. There are hints of underbrush and herbs on the palate that show up on the big, pure finish with fruit that’s just a touch chunky and an almost spicy note of green anise seeds on the finale. A lovely wine, full and fresh. 90pts
There’s something a touch funky on the nose here with a very smoky and minerally profile that recalls bacon fat and ashes but there’s also plenty of sweet fruit and even a hint of apricot glaze. In the mouth this is elegant and very refined with big, black cherry fruit that’s tight and wound up. There are lovely, nuanced notes of sandalwood, dried citrus rinds and herbs in the mouth but the tannins really clamp down on the finish. Nonetheless the core of fruit is just so pretty, faceted, and ripe that this is certain to benefit from several years aging. 94pts
Aged for 2 years in barrique, 75% new, followed by 2 years in bottle Slightly jammy on the nose, but exhibiting a chalky dryness as well with notes of roast meat and dried medicinal roots. With air this gains some focus with a touch of celery and hints of rosewood and quinine. The fruit remains pretty jammy and black with refreshing notes of mint and minerals offering some relief from the darkness. In the mouth this is rich and chewy with solid acids and a fairly tannic profile. It’s got plenty of fruit to buffer the tannins and gains a bit of a peppery tone from the wood that works well with the wine’s innate sweetness. The finish is moderately long with notes of burnished cherry and bitter melon rind that are highlighted by a touch of raspy mouthgrab. This is definitely a frontloaded wine and may reveal better length in time but is not among the finest I Sodis. 89pts
which was very young with it unevolved nose of sweet, slightly smoky oak and sandy mineral tones. In the mouth this was lush and rich with great mineral cut and rigid, slightly rustic tannins that were bracing anf lingered on the licorice tinged finish. Far to young but promising indeed.
Cut red plums, smoke, hickory from the oak, a little flint, steel, apple core, lovely sweet violet note. Bright, fairly tense. I prefer the ‘97 to this. Tight and a bit oaky today. A bit chewy, lightly, full of bitter cherry fruit, classic austere, aggressive stuff. This is charged with fruit. Ready to beat your mouth into submission, but has fine fresh, ripe fruit. There is a lingering black cherry pit note on the finale. 91pts
Iron, limestone, flower petals, spice. This is very fine, very perfumed, blood-penetrating nose. Fresh and rich, powerful wine. This has real energy in the mouth, lovely citrus and rosehip notes, red cherry fruit, strawberry. Lovely, still youthful. A bit liquory, nice spice. Mineral follow-through, sapid, almost salty, tense and vibrant, long fruit. Almost chewy yet rather refined. 93 pts
Nice strawberry fruit on the nose which is a contrast to its deep violet hue. Structured and complex, yet with a smooth mouthfeel, subtle tannins and bright acidity
Bright, tart fruit with a balanced acidity, woodsy flavors (pinecone, cedar), good weight and smoothness. Very well balanced.
Brighter bing cherry and plum notes, with nice acidity and good structure. Will improve over next 12-18 mos.
pleasant ripe berry nose with smooth, balanced tannins, fullness on the palate and enough structure to age for a while more. Exquisite with a rare steak.
Nice depth in the midpalate to the leather, herbs, and plum fruit. Silky texture.
Aromas of warm herb and prune, and flavors of brandied cherries and plum. Interesting wine.
Enjoyed this wine immensely last night (2/08) upon tasting for the first time. Offered a great deal of leathery, dirty, under brushy character when first sniffed, and quickly settled into delicious brownie pan warmth and cocoa on the finish. Remarkable wine.
This Chianti is brilliant ruby red with an ample bouquet of violets, iris and vanilla followed by deep layers of fruit on the palate. Dry and full-bodied with hints of almond and slight notes of tobacco. This is a concentrated, consistently round wine with a velvety feel and a lingering finish.*_HALF-BOTTLE_*
