Castaño Colección Do Yecla 2013

Winemaker's Notes:

The Castaño family has 410 hectares of vineyards in Yecla in south eastern Spain. They have steadily improved quality over the last few years and modernised their style. They symbolise the best of what southern Spain has to offer: rich, warm climate wines made from grapes grown at altitude and transformed into robustly modern wines. Dark and intense shiny red in the glass. It is complex on the nose, with ripe black fruit aromas, notes of clove and black pepper and elegant hints of oak. Soft on the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet soft and delicate, with marked but elegant tannins. There is a rich, pleasant, and lengthly finish.

From that moment onward, Ramon did not stop making improvements. It was in the early 80s when he bought the first bottling plant. During the 90's, participation in trade fairs, tastings, and market research trips began with the full incorporation of his three sons: Ramon, Juan Pedro, and Daniel. It was during this period that the recognition and appreciation, both national and internationally, arrived. The courage and determination of a man deeply rooted began to bear fruit. The development of Bodegas Castano is unstoppable, and the improvements are never-ending. The most recent of these was completed in 2002 with the construction of state-of-the-art storage premises: completely air-conditioned, with a new cooling chamber. Read less

On the scrounge during a hectically short lunch break, I came upon a perennial favorite at an unusual bargain-basement price. This above average Monastrell has an inviting deep, black robe redolent of blueberry, is well balanced on entry with some character poking through and yes - even structure for a couple more years in the cellar! Viva España! Buy by the case and seek out the even better 2009 vintage. 88 points

Nice cherry and plummy nose. Its a very rich and fruity wine. The finish is some leather from the tannins and a touch of cardamon

This was a great find. Definitely benefits from a lot of decanting. This bottle is full of licorice, chocolate, and earth. Full-bodied and a lingering finish that brings the flavors back to you for another go. Wish I could find another bottle like this!

Tiefes Purpur.
