Casillero Diablo Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Intense and somewhat extracted smelling with deep black currant and jellied black fruit aromas topped with peppery hints of oak spice and tobacco. This enters the mouth with surprising softness, the lowish acidity lends volume to this on the palate but robs it of some of its liveliness. The flavors are deep and fairly intense with earth, tobacco and cocoa streaks running through the intense black currant fruit. The wood pops on the backend with nuanced caramel notes, adding further complexity on the moderately long and drying finish. A lot of wine but a bit heavy and clumsy for my palate. 86pts

The presence of the fruit is remarkable thanks to the lively acidity, allowing notes of blackberries, cassis and figs to flourish. The tannins are strong but thanks to the barrel aging they end being round and long. The end palate is complex with flavors of the barrels like brown sugar and spices. Owing to the blend, this wine is versatile for food paring. From different cuts of red meat, to lamb, goat, duck and veal. Meat with a good quantity of fat/grease is recommended due to the high presence of tannins that harmonize perfectly with the composition of the meat (fat/grease and proteins). Mature cheeses are equally recommended above all if they are used in sauces. ~ The Winery ~

We paired this wine with a slow cooked beef burgundy dish. It was light and a little too fruity for a savory beef dish. Kind of acidic too. On its own, it is an interesting full wine.

Very similar to their Carmenere, but sweeter. Had that sweet cherry and thinness typical of shiraz. Very drinkable.

The 2010 Casillero del Diablo Reserva Privada Sauvignon Blanc is sourced from Limari. It was fermented and raised in stainless steel. Herbal notes of sage, thyme, and cut grass are accompanied by lime and grapefruit aromas. Medium-bodied, concentrated, and balanced in the glass, this dry, tasty effort will pair well with oysters and clams. Drink it over the next 12-18 months. - Robert Parker 86 Points

Tiefes, intensives Rubinrot.

Stout and compact out of the blocks, with ripe cassis and berry aromas and only a pinch of herbal spiciness. It's creamy, big and warm in the mouth, with a ton of mocha, chocolate, cassis and blackberry. Intense and dark late, with a coconut sweetness to the finish. M.S. Dark plum, fig and blackberry fruit is nicely integrated with roasted coffee and vanilla notes. Solid, fleshy finish. Drink now. 40,500 cases made. -JM

A new addition to the Casillero line of great values, this Reserva Privada offers currant and black pepper scents over a firm texture; its tannins support the wine's refreshing fruit character.

Deep ruby. Cherry-vanilla, cassis and mint on the nose. Deep dark fruit flavors are complicated by succulent herbs and a slow-building licorice quality. Oak spices creep up on the finish but the fruit maintains the upper hand. I'd drink this now, for the lush fruit.
